I watched a bunch of AI sessions at the WEF so you wouldn’t have to.

But you should read this.

the idea that AI criticism is / has had much concrete effect beyond perhaps some minor chin stroking from those in power about 'regulation' is absurd when you consider the enormous power differentials between AI's promoters and everyone else

what exactly is going on at UKRI?
The leaders of four major physics infrastructure projects due to receive over £280m from UKRI were told in December they have “not been prioritised” for funding

The projects include an upgrade to the LHC at Cern and a new US particle accelerator

none of this says anything about how previous cross-disciplinary calls worked out in practice - the pros, and the unintended side effects and inequities

if UKRI is to make an argument about more UK research being "bucketised" like this it had better be clear about those practical features
Hot off the press - a letter from the Exec Chair of @ukri.org explaining his plans and in particular the financial position of STFC. It notes curiosity driven research is protected and will make up around half of UKRI spend over the coming period

AI can help us do that.

I use the phrase "self-soothing" language a lot to describe how organisations embed self-praise / self-affirmation (with no real reflection on whether it is appropriate or relevant) into (even the most banal) communications with external audiences...once you see it, you can't unsee it.

isn't this a fairly apple and pears comparison?

would it make more sense to put stuff like "Word" or "my banking app" and "Microsoft the company" in there?

(obviously surveys are fundamentally broken methodologically but let's not go there...)

anyone in a research field that is dominated by US researchers gets a clear view of what this hegemony means in practice

it's also extremely instructive, say, for Europeans, to have their own academic hegemony towards other non-Euro participants reflected back at them
