There's a REALLY quick and easy survey for the public consultation on the Basic Income for the Arts scheme - it only takes a few seconds, anyone can fill it in, and it could make a huge difference to arts workers in Ireland. Take a few ticks to places a few ticks here: ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/run...

This is a brilliant tour for any 1798 heads, or anyone just interested in the history of Saintfield. A full review would ruin all the little surprises Mark, the tour guide, has built in. It’s really worth your time.

Take 10 minutes out of your evening to read about the Great Hunger in Newtownards. A superb short film 👏👏👏. Ad Prof Kinealy’s research has shown ( www.qu.edu/faculty-and-...), the situation in Down was much worse during the famine than is usually acknowledged.

(Sorry for briefly spamming my own prints on here, but unfortunately it's still necessary to make some sort of tenuous living from drawing due to a significant delay in successfully wooing a wealthy bachelor farmer and being whisked off in his John Deere to a life of diamond-encrusted wellies)

Did you know that the 1798 Alien & Sedition Act currently in the news in the USA has a United Irishmen connection? At the time thousands emigrated to the USA but the Irish were described as a “mass of vicious and disorganizing characters who can not live peaceably at home.. 1/2

I’d appreciate a share on this one 🙏. I’m trying to find the lyrics of “The Ballad of Samuel Jamison”. They were published by Hugh Shields in 1972 in an article called ‘Some songs and ballads in use in the province of Ulster’ in Ulster Folklife Volume 18 (pp 34-65). Haven’t been able to get a copy.

Checking out the important 1798 sites in Dublin. Here’s the original Croppie Boy, Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Born an aristocrat, he abandoned it to become an influential United Irishman. He was mortally wounded during his arrest prior to the rebellion.

The American Republic was saved today in 1783

At a hugely dramatic moment in US history, George Washington delivered an emotional appeal to his army not to stage a coup.

His intervention worked and the republican experiment endured.
