Did you know that the 1798 Alien & Sedition Act currently in the news in the USA has a United Irishmen connection? At the time thousands emigrated to the USA but the Irish were described as a “mass of vicious and disorganizing characters who can not live peaceably at home.. 1/2

I’d appreciate a share on this one 🙏. I’m trying to find the lyrics of “The Ballad of Samuel Jamison”. They were published by Hugh Shields in 1972 in an article called ‘Some songs and ballads in use in the province of Ulster’ in Ulster Folklife Volume 18 (pp 34-65). Haven’t been able to get a copy.

Although some of the statues commemorating 1798 and the United Irishmen are impressive, so much more could be done with this story.

The juxtaposition of the Great Hunger/ an Gorta Mór statues and that of 1798 United Irishman leader, Wolfe Tone in St Stephen’s green is stunning.

Checking out the important 1798 sites in Dublin. Here’s the original Croppie Boy, Lord Edward Fitzgerald. Born an aristocrat, he abandoned it to become an influential United Irishman. He was mortally wounded during his arrest prior to the rebellion.
