Top officials at the Houston-based company cheated investors and enriched themselves through complex accounting gimmicks like overvaluing assets to boost cash flow and earnings statements, which made the company even more appealing to investors. The Investigation When Enron declared bankruptcy in December 2001 and took with it the nest eggs of thousands of employees and stockholders, the FBI Houston Field Office assigned two agents to investigate. Within weeks, the number of agents and support staff assigned to the case grew to 45, many hand-picked from field offices around the country for their expertise in traversing even the most circuitous paper trails. The sheer magnitude of the case prompted the creation of the multi-agency Enron Task Force, a unique blend of investigators and analysts from the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Division, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and prosecutors from the Department of Justice. In January 2002, agents executed a consent search of Enron’s 50-story corporate headquarters building. The search lasted nine days as investigators unearthed critical documents and emerged with more than 400 boxes of evidence. At the same time, agents conducted more than 100 interviews that helped identify fresh leads for investigators. In February 2002, Enron’s board of directors issued findings from its own internal investigation—the Powers Report, named for William Powers Jr., head of the special investigation committee that wrote it—that said Enron executives reaped millions by using a web of partnerships to generate false profits and hiding Enron’s true debt. Crunchy timelines burn people out. Low page rates and advances burn people out. Give a cartoonist a living salary and the time to work, and you are investing in a long-term CAREER. Books get passed around. Audiences grow over TIME. Books don't have to be first-day bestsellers to be successful.

The “google is using your email to train AI” debacle is imo most instructively seen as tracer dye for multiple failures: many people are instinctively skeptical of tech companies now; and many outlets that should have had experts able to cogently weigh in and go “wait a minute” simply don’t anymore.

the reason 101 dalmations looks like that is because disney incorporated xerography (ie early photocopying technology) into the animation process. rough pencils (by mostly male animators) were copied onto the cels so that disney could fire the (mostly female) inkers. remember that art can lie to you

since the "google is now training gemini on your email contents" thing keeps bumping around here: it's _not happening_. I say this not to defend google but because I know a lot of people that have broken their filtering and made their lives much more annoying from sheer misinformation.

Dear Publisher - We recently shared the news that Baker & Taylor was shutting down operations. When we learned they were financially unstable, Ingram took many steps to reduce credit exposure and stock levels, while continuing availability of books to library customers. Those steps were highly successful and the credit balance to the account was brought down significantly over time. At the time they shut down operations, their remaining stock on hand was minimal. Unfortunately, we have received notice that they will not pay the outstanding amounts they do owe and no further stock will be returned. Ingram is taking on the first $100,000, but the debt owed exceeds that amount. As a result, a chargeback for your pro rata share will be on your December statement (available the first week of January), per the terms of your contract.
