Some may know that I mostly write about Procopius and Agathias, but here is a review essay I wrote for Histos on another of my favourite sixth-century authors John Malalas: histos.org/index.php/hi....

I love Halloween...but a bit sad this year since I'm down to one child for trick-or-treating

When they are playing well, like now, they can be a top 25 team along the same lines of Boise State that could make the college playoff, so not too low of a ceiling, especially when one considers the declining prestige of a program like UCLA which is struggling in the revamped 'Big 10'

Can I get an update on this take😁

First proofs day! Coming soon an article on the Gothic Queen Matasuintha and Justinian's cousin Germanus, that I really enjoyed researching and writing:

This feels both unfair and unkind. Lee and Merle are brilliant scholars—even if I don’t agree with all of their positions on the Bubonic Plague, I certainly don’t begrudge them a grant. We should all take a step back and consider that what we say here can have real consequences for others.

Devastating news about Dennis. As a tribute here is a link to his magisterial piece: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Yes, it was a thorough and positive review...though I suspect there was a slight dig at me in his discussion of Rozycki's chapter!

Having now heard from my new series editor @ Routledge (who took over from the original editor at AUP), I’m pleased to share that, Portraits of Generalship & Authority in the Age of Justinian and Beyond, is on track and currently scheduled for publication in early 2026.

As my former country falls ever further into despotism and now what I feel is irreversible decline, I am facing the real possibility that I may never set foot there again, which is both painful and gratifying...

Interesting, considering our differences over methodology, that Rance echoes many of my thoughts found in my original review of an earlier version of the manuscript....

It occurred to me that MAGA isn’t actually a nostalgia for Greatness, rather a longing for American Exceptionalism. They are mad that the rest of the world has good movies & good music & technology too. They want it to be like the 50’s: cool Americans vs. the miserable rest!

They hate our freedoms!
