First proofs day! Coming soon an article on the Gothic Queen Matasuintha and Justinian's cousin Germanus, that I really enjoyed researching and writing:

Perhaps a sign that I'm on the cusp of being a senior rather than mid-career academic.???

Good news: my 12,000-word article dedicated to the memory of Dariusz Brodka, 'Two Weddings and a Funeral: Marriage and Death in the House of Germanus,' has passed peer review and will be published in Classica Cracoviensia 28 at the end of the year.

The sarcophagus of Seda, the eunuch chamberlain of the Gothic Rex Theoderic (r. 489/93–526), serves as a fitting reminder that by the sixth century, nothing signified imperial Roman authority more than possessing one’s own contingent of eunuchs.

I have one superpower: I can add fantastic books—like the one below by
@laurysarti.bsky.social
- to my university library with the press of a button, good thing it does not work for chocolate bars.

As Neville nicely puts it:
'to make Roman history a key
step in the story of advancing Western Civilization, the western part of Roman
history needs to be central to that story. The lopsided temporal predominance of
eastern Roman history had to be undercut and discounted.'

A volume by the brilliant and gracious, Christopher Mallan, a fellow classmate in Ancient Greek for 2 years @ UQ who helped me finally understand genitive absolute!

Just finished the other review in the nick of time—perfect timing, as this beauty arrived in the post today. I’ll be reviewing it for Early Medieval Europe.

I am pleased to have completed my review of Maroula Perisanidi's stimulating Masculinity in Byzantium, c. 100-1200: Scholars, Clerics, and Violence, which should appear soon in the Medieval Review.

I can highly recommend Maroula Perisanidi's Masculinity in Byzantium, c. 100-1200: Scholars, Clerics, and Violence. A slim volume that packs an edifying punch!

A year later than originally planned, I have at last finished a draft of my article dedicated to the memory of my friend Dariusz Brodka: Two Weddings and a Funeral: Marriage and Death in the House of Germanus. Still needs some polishing, but pretty happy with it.

It wasn’t easy, but I’m very happy to share that my edited volume Portraits of Generalship and Authority in the Age of Justinian has successfully made it through a rigorous (and genuinely helpful) peer-review process and will be published later this year with @amsterdamupress.bsky.social .

Interesting the images that were generated when I asked Co-pilot to generate a few pictures from an article I have written on the wedding between Matasuintha and Germanus in 549

One of the biggest errors I still see big name scholars making is describing Germanus as Justinian's nephew, which as Cristini points out is based on a mistaken modern reading of Procopius. Moorhead and Whitby had it both ways describing G in the same papers as J's cousin & nephew!
