Today is the day!!! Existential Politics is out in the world!

Read about why we’re doing climate policy wrong (too focused on measuring emissions) & what we should do instead (focus on $$ to constrain fossil asset owners & expand green asset owners). Just in time for #COP30.

I think it’s a corker! And I would be happy to chat about it. 😁

Absolutely loved working with @npr.org's Short Wave podcast on this nail-biter episode about a group trying to tackle the biggest driver of global warming at this year's climate conference.

LOL. So true!

Don't sell yourself short! I try to write for a very broad audience!

oops, yes! sorry.

DM me your deets and I will have the publisher send to you and then I can come on your podcast and we can talk about it!

6/ And this isn’t just a today problem. Ownership of green assets will shape inequality trends for decades (if not centuries!).

We must see wealth disparity as a cause of climate change – and therefore use taxation as a key lever for addressing it. FIN

5/ Of course, the super rich don’t want to be taxed, but the #OECD corporate minimum tax is a step in the right direction. And these kinds of numbers can help generate political pressure for a meaningful UN #TaxTreaty

4/ Even the baseline scenario would meet (and greatly surpass) the climate finance goal agreed to at #COP29), which is $300B annually by 2035.

3/ Taxing wealthy individuals could help A LOT – in many ways. Reducing inequality helps democracies, raises $$ for gov’ts (especially in Global South) and could help finance green transition.

2/ The statistics are staggering, and the trends suggest this isn’t getting any better

New global inequality report confirms what climate justice scholars and advocates have been saying for years: inequality and climate are inextricably bound up together. Extreme wealth causes climate change, which is why I argue in my new book that tax policy is climate policy. THREAD

Hooray!!! 🙏

Textbook example of what I call "managing tons" favours big emitters. Big tech now fighting over what counts as RE credits to offset emissions in GHG Protocol, which affects net zero claims.

This stuff is deeeeep in the GHG accounting weeds, but has serious implications for what counts as green.

Yup!

Domestic politics definitely vary. Sometimes green asset owners split by tech. EX Iberdrola opposed solar subsidies due to its wind holdings. Many energy firms hold a mix of green/fossil which can lead to pro-fossil behaviour in some cases.

@greenprofgreen.bsky.social and I reflect on #COP30's failure to even mention fossil fuels. In its silence Canada hides behind petro-states like Saudi Arabia and Russia. It's time to join more constructive fossil fuel producers in a coalition of the willing.

UN climate talks and Canadian policy can't ignore fossil fuels
COP30 ended with an astounding contradiction: an agreement to get to net-zero emissions by 2050 without acknowledging the need to wind down use of the fossil fuels.

This is brilliant. I want to do this!!!

Umm...the PRESIDENT of #COP30 says that getting climate diplomacy done requires going outside the #ParisAgreement.

The significance of this admission cannot be understated.

It's time to look to other int'l institutions to be the engine of climate policy: tax, trade, investment, finance.
