'Memba all that research & reporting on how carbon offsets are, well, bullshit? Well, the EU NDC just dropped and, yep, offsets are in there. Resurrected from the dead after being excised from the EU-ETS.

US Gov't is shut down but @noaa.gov still toiling away at destroying decades of multilateral cooperation and ocean ecosystems in one fell swoop.

Folks, this is really, *really* bad.

There's a whole chapter of my book, Existential Politics, that explains how GHG accounting works and the fundamental conceptual problems with measuring GHGs at the firm level. This change is a drop in the bucket in addressing the issues w carbon accounting. 1/

@carbonmarketwatch.bsky.social report follows the exact playbook I describe in Existential Politics. Almost no one in offset markets has an interest in improving the quality of credits. The result is more weak rules, this time on permanence. #COP30 #askapoliticalscientist

2/ The complex tiered pricing system meant the majority of emissions would have been unpriced. www.transportenvironment.org/uploads/file...

3/ It seems v likely that he will roll back the proposed emissions cap on oil & gas – the largest source of emissions in Canada, which has *grown* by 77% since 1990.

Very important paper by @gregorsemieniuk.bsky.social that shows, as I have argued, that tax policy is climate policy. We cannot phaseout #fossilfuels without attacking their wealth.

The key is to shift away from managing tons to focusing on ASSETS -- and the international tax, trade and finance institutions that manage them.

@ttchelps.bsky.social because I failed to see this sign, I received a ticket for $195 for walking in the bus lane at Bathurst station. The ticket was written by FOUR TTC officers. Is this the best use of TTC resources? Or to incentivize the use of public transit? cc @diannesaxe.bsky.social

So much stupid in here. Yes, EV sales down b/c gov't ended incentive program. Instead of rolling back the ZEV mandate, govt should resume incentives. This will also help automakers transition to become green asset owners who push for more decarbonization.

excellent explanation of how the US budget destabilized international tax reform, and what the OECD rules will look like going forward. better than nothing, but more kowtowing to Trump's economic warfare.

Critical groundwork for #COP30 happening now at the #UNFCCC SBI and SBSTA meetings. Developing countries, repped by Bolivia throwing down the gauntlet carbon tariffs, the new policy darling of developed countries.

Trade policy is the new climate policy.

US admin blowing up multilateralism, first in #deepseamining, now in tax cooperation. US budget's proposed "revenge tax" will punish firms from countries that impose the AGREED TO global minimum corporate tax.

It's impressive how economically stupid spite can be.
