One of the reasons I’m excited to teach high school Social Sciences and History in Aotearoa New Zealand is the curriculum that integrates the value and lessons to be drawn from ALL of the country’s past. But this government ruins everything it touches and I’m too furious for words.

A FB post from David Seymour: Wonderful news today that the highly politicised “Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum” has been fixed. The Marxist ‘big ideas’ such as ‘Māori history is the foundational and continuous history of Aotearoa New Zealand’ and ‘The course of Aotearoa New Zealand’s histories has been shaped by the use of power’ are GONE.

In their place is a new and balanced History Curriculum. In line with the ACT coalition commitment to ‘Restore balance to the Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories curriculum’ Children will learn where they’re from, but also that our history is part of a wider human story. That story is older than our country and continues alongside us today.

Best of all, the Education Review Office’s review of the History Curriculum found that this is what children want. They want to learn new and interesting things that aren’t familiar to expand their minds, and I’m so proud our Government has rejected the social engineering approach to deliver it.

I’m feeling a bit freaked out 😱 by the fact my youngest child is about to finish school in 4 days time 😬. No more “it’s a school night you have to by home by ⏱️convo’s. No more lunches 🥪 to make. No future plans for offspring as yet. So I’m just gonna have to chill. 😎. Eeek
