That’s fair, he was an S-tier character actor, but character actors are only recognizable if you’ve seen a certain amount of movies from the era, like the stable of famous character actors from the 80s/90s that are household names for the people who grew up on those movies

The “I don’t like black and white movies/movies from before 1970” crowd (though Robin Hood is in color!)

You’re in for a treat, he’s one of my favorite directors! I’ve seen every movie except his first two.

All fantastic! The first two are definitely in my top 5, and Last Temptation is up there as well!

One of my favorite Scorsese movies, and favorite movies overall!

Martin Scorsese and his daughter Francesca read Letterboxd reviews and guessed which Scorsese movie they were about.

ok this cheered me up

That looks like a delightful Unkempt Joseph

This was a discovery for me too this year! So good! Great Oscar-nominated performance by Fredric March, fantastic cinematography and effects (for the time of course)!
Crossed the ‘31 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde off my Halloween list tonight. Damn, this was so immaculately shot and directed. Those transformations! That first-person opening! What a film.

GODZILLA (1954) and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN (1957) would make a really interesting double feature showcasing the mounting fears of the first decade after the nuclear Pandora’s Box was opened. Makes lizards big and men tiny!

You’re in for a treat! Whale really gets to shine, and the story is more complex, drawing more from the original Shelley novel

Both are great examples of horror movies providing an outlet for outsider art as Hollywood moved towards stricter Hays Code enforcement

I still prefer Nosferatu overall, but Browning isn’t far off, and you can see the German expressionist influence (Freaks is also excellent!). I think I have such a love for the original Frankenstein story that it’s tough seeing it barebones like in Whale’s movie, but Bride brings in more Shelley!

I would agree with this! Have you seen Bride of Frankenstein? Technically a sequel, but I think it far outplays the original (my understanding is that the original suffered from excessive studio notes, while James Whale had more of a blank check for Bride)

I only watched it this year, but Claude Rains is one of my favorite actors from that era, all banger performances, and it was delightful seeing him get a chance to lead a movie!

Looking forward to watching Joan Crawford girlbossing in MILDRED PIERCE this Noirvember! 📽️

Watching the 2007 Beowulf, Polar Express meets Game of Thrones in an unholy and misguided union, and I can’t help but think of this when Beowulf constantly raises his arms and shouts “Beowulf!”:

NW: OUT OF THE PAST (1947), and it’s a little disorienting to see a young Kirk Douglas & a young Robert Mitchum, who I have historically confused, Old Hollywood’s two most famous cleft chins!

Raimi is fantastic! I just got to see Spider-Man in a theater, and I appreciated and liked it so much more after seeing a lot of his horror films

A much better film that AHOD doesn’t even come close to matching in every respect, despite having 60 years of filmmaking history and political history behind it. And much more courageous. AHOD is trying to portray a FAIL SAFE situation in a DR. STRANGELOVE world 2/2

Just watched A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, the new Kathryn Bigelow movie, and am very conflicted. On the one hand, it’s well made, well scored, highly entertaining filmmaking. On the other, it’s clearly trying to say something, but the clear analog for this movie is Sidney Lumet’s FAIL SAFE (1964), 1/x

Perhaps the first use of “I can’t function until I’ve had my coffee”, in my unscientific experience! 📽️

Now watching the Shape of Water prequel: Creature from the Black Lagoon! 📽️

And I’m so mad about how many better movies got robbed of showtimes (especially IMAX) because Disney threw money at it to shove it down our throats with an obscene amount of showtimes!
