His charisma is fundamentally incompatible with me (and likely many of the people on Bluesky) but it’s kind of insane to say it doesn’t exist

Charitably, as a platner hater, I'd say there's some pragmatic chauvinism behind elevating a "white working class" socialist that whites elsewhere can relate to and move into socialism, but the WWC mythos defeats the pragmatism so platner is exactly what u get from the whole thing.

Well, looks like Korea DPR is going to win their second straight U17 WWC in ridiculously dominant fashion.

2-0
2-1
5-0
6-1
5-1
2-0

And already 2-0 vs Netherlands in the final.

A callup? 70%. A place on the WWC squad? 10-20% probably, depending on who’s injured

I have an unfair question that touches on the #Spirit and #USWNT. I think Hal Hershfelt would be a great fit on the #USWNT midfield (a taller, meaner Coffey). What are the odds she gets a callup?

Saw a thread on table displays the other day, & while I did reply to that directly, I thought it would be fun to do a thread on it, too. Learn from my mistakes!

*White* working class. Democrats already win the non-white working class. Saying working class when you mean WWC is hurtful. It's (sorry about this) erasure.
This from @gregsargent.bsky.social is exactly right.

Donald Trump's authoritarianism and the punishing reality of everyday life under his rule are inextricably linked.

not as far as I know, different part of the state too (affluent North Jersey train station towns for this Sweeney, vs. Philly WWC suburbs/exurbs for the other one)

It’s Korea DPR and the Netherlands in the FIFA u17 WWC Final! 🇰🇵🇳🇱
November 5, 2025 at 9:13 PM
Yeah can’t really get out from under the cold hard fact that the people that were backing him sincerely believe that he is some kind of WWC prince that was promised

Tbh that’s grimmer than “he’s a Manchurian candidate” bc wow spectacular misfire on the Manchurian candidate here if that’s the case

Racism is the reason the leftist message won't resonate down south. Race > class. The WWC won't vote for social programs if they benefit Black people and POC too. See the failures of Bernie for an example.

DPR Korea are once again, cooking at the U17 WWC, and you might find yourself wondering both how, and what that means for the senior team.
Well, from last year, a deep dive into one of the strangest success stories in woso. equalizersoccer.com/2024/11/05/n...
Another trophy for North Korea: The story of the best national team that nobody knows
North Korea just won the U-17 and U-20 World Cups a month apart, but the senior team hasn't been to a World Cup since 2011

Them plus climate-change “alarmists” & black & brown people.

Tl;DR: fuck over the core of the Democratic Party base in order to exclusively cater to the WWC.
November 3, 2025 at 4:42 AM
in previous seasons you've spoken about potentially wanting to see a back 3, and my mind does come back to how good russo was in sarina's 'emergency' wwc'23 formation.. so as a (most likely hypothetical) thought exercise, how do you imagine it would look if we opted to match chelsea's recent shape?
November 3, 2025 at 8:03 AM
Bernie isn't a Nazi, but he's mentally stuck in the 1960s and thinks that the white working-class is the rightful base of the Democratic Party. He has been openly dismissive of the minority base that exists *today* b/c he thinks their issues are distraction from what he thinks the WWC wants.

For the Women's game...

These are my top 3 moments from WWC 2023, from an Aussie perspective:

1: PSO v France
2: Sam Kerr stunner in the SF
3: 4-0 over Canada in Melbourne

Top 3 outside of Aus matches

1: NZ v Norway
2: PSO between US v Sweden
3: France v Jamaica

That is all.

Dan Osborn, the one WWC coded candidate from a blue collar background and who was a union leader has had very minimal drama unlike Platner. Imo union leaders are a good way to recruit working class but vetted candidates. You need to win over your peers to get elected one!

This is a start but I am once again baffled by the complete invisibility of/attention to the OTHER major tournament FIFA hosts, the WWC. Especially when the US is expected to be one of the hosts for 2031!!! Why is the WC 2026 in the US an issue but not 2031?

"Making up a guy to not get mad at" is an incredibly necessary variant and feels like what I often describe as writing fanfiction about bad people.

I've most often used the phrase about leftists defending WWC chuds, which, uh. Normally I mean the overtly maga types but obviously fits Pl*tner too.
People are simply making up a guy to not get mad at
Where are you getting this from? Platner attended an expensive private school and is the child *and grandchild* of people with postgraduate education. He himself says he went into the military because he “read too much Hemingway.”
October 30, 2025 at 2:55 PM
He's a cishet white man who cosplays as working class. He's fodder for a very online, very WWC-centric form of leftist.
I have to keep reminding you there are seven or eight Democrats running for this nomination, why do we keep talking about this
Robert Byrd seemed to genuinely repent for his past and spent decades atoning for it, to the point where the NAACP mourned his death as the loss of a civil rights champion. People can indeed change.

But there's no sign of a similar arc of sincere repentance and reckoning in Platner's case.

So many white people really, really want to defend Nazis/Nazi-adjacent people, almost regardless of their ideology, which says quite a lot about them.

This isn't horseshoe theory at work, this is just white people giving passes to other white people, and valuing the WWC over non-white safety.
October 29, 2025 at 6:15 PM
I read his M4A draft. You are not wrong. It was horrible. He's a covert white supremacist who actually dislikes the WWC people he pretends to champion. We will be companions for life on this issue.

Dozens of people’s u17 WWC hopes turn towards Paraguay tomorrow
That’s a tough loss but I’m convinced of Micayla Johnson and I wonder if Maddie DiMaria actually plays NCAA soccer.
