I'm honestly surprised nobody in Winhill pointed out Squall's resemblance to Raine during the party's visit.
He looks JUST like his mother. The resemblance is undeniable.

The residents there are flawed people, and Laguna's rosy memories paint an incomplete picture.
While you see hints of it during the Laguna bit, visiting the town with the main party confirms that the people of Winhill DESPISED Laguna and saw him as an outsider unworthy of Raine's time or attention.

One thing I find interesting in FFVIII is when you visit Winhill in the Laguna Sequence, the lighting is very warm and the whole town feels cozy and homey.
When you visit the actual town with the main party though, the lighting is a lot more dull and the colors are all washed out and grey.

so she was required to be under the radar from the SeeDs mostly (basically, in this verse it was a side thing that edea, cid, laguna & odine led an excavation) and travel a LOT between edea's house, esthar, and winhill (she loves the kids there....)

but also, in the sequel it's a bit of a different take, they don't go to the DSRC either during base game in this verse, they do it AFTER. prior to the inaug. ball, BG gets reports on seismic activity affecting winhill + other towns, so the SeeDs head over to the DSRC... +

Putting aside little issues like monsters falling from the moon every now and then, FFVIII's prerendered backgrounds have me believing it would be a nice world to live in.
