One duck that has been a bit of a mystery to me. They have a very distinct white and brown pattern of feathers, red-brown eyes and a black bill. I'm leaning towards either Gadwall or Widgeon but not particularly certain and either are a little bit uncommon in my range🪶

Shell Nature Studies JANUARY Wildfowl ‘In the midst of winter some wildfowl begin their spring. Unexpected, and graceful is the queer courtship of the ducks. Watch lakes, reservoirs, where the migrants court and pair before the long flight north. Goosanders (+) and red-breasted mergansers (2) may go no further than Scotland, but the smaller, handsome smew (3), most often seen in Britain, perhaps, on the great reservoirs that serve London, is bound for its nest-hole in some forest-tree of Lapland or northern Russia. These three are 'sawbill' ducks, which dive for their fish. Also diving ducks are our native tufted ducks (4) and pochard (5). A drake scaup (6), perhaps from Iceland, floats among the pack of tufted. The surface-feeding ducks spend much of the day asleep on the bank. Widgeon (7), teal (8), mallard (9), shoveler (10) and pintail (11) all nest in some part of Britain. Britain's two commonest wild geese are seen grazing on peaceful water-meadows, or moving, in skeins, to new feeding-grounds. The white-fronted goose (12) breeds in Western Siberia: nearly all the world's pink-footed geese (13) come from Iceland to spend the winter in Britain.’ YOU CAN BE SURE OF SHELL ICA The Key to the Countryside

Slightly smaller duck, swimming. The American widgeon is mostly grey-brown, with a patch of green over his eye and a white stripe along the top of his head. Small ripples on the surface of the water, and a distorted reflection of the duck.

We took our traditional new-year birding walk around Boulmer, Northumberland, this year and stayed until sunset. We saw 32 species including hundreds of lapwing and golden plover, smaller numbers of grey plover, plus widgeon, eider, curlew, and even a song thrush and grey wagtail on the beach.

Kyle, a large, purple chimera, and widgeon, am equally large, orange dragon, but their arms together and merge into each other to create a dual faced, monstrous abomination. The two separate sides merge into one that’s even more beastly, and they smile a monstrous, sexy grin. The chimera dragon flexes their girth! Even the chimera’s tail, once rather meek, now has a full head of hair from the dragon’s own tail.
