Great, so Vivergo fuels closed for absolutely nothing. So many jobs lost on a deal that never materialised.

Joking apart - my friend from East Yorks (the area mentioned) messaged me this morning because 4,500 jobs are going in her area because Vivergo are having to close down their bio ethanol plant because of the trade deal made with US.

Labour are so disappointing that they’re facilitating Reform.

Vivergo Fuels’ bioethanol plant is at risk of closure due to the UK-US trade deal, which allows 1.4 billion liters of tariff-free American ethanol into the British market.

It’s a volume Vivergo’s managing director Ben Hackett says is equivalent to the entire UK bioethanol market.

Vivergo is actually the smaller of the two British bioethanol plants, but the other one is likely to close as well.

Beyond the jobs lost at the plants the impact will be limited; mainly lower prices for farmers for grains only good enough for animal feed (the plants bought ~20% of such grains)
Associated British Foods has announced it is closing its Vivergo bioethanol plant in Hull as a result of concessions to the US in the recent UK-US trade deal. Had been on the cards, but another headache for No 10.

Looks like Starmer's surrender deal with the USA* has likely killed off the UK's largest bioethanol plant, with a potential 200 jobs lost.

(*He gave Trump an annual tariff-free quota of 1.4 billion litres of ethanol, avoiding our 19% tariff.)

Bioethanol redundancies to start next week after rescue ruled out
The UK's largest bioethanol facility, Vivergo Fuels in Hull, will commence operations closure on Monday after the government opted not to extend a financial rescue package to the sector. Associated British Foods, which owns Vivergo, announced that the first round of employee redundancies would take effect on Tuesday. Both Vivergo Fuels and Ensus, the owner of the UK's second-largest bioethanol plant located in Redcar, had previously signaled that their operations could become unsustainable without government intervention.

Vivergo was always going to struggle, BP sold it within a few after construction, hugely reliant on UK grown wheat with recent poor harvests and high prices. When it first opened, the first shipment went to NL and I suspect most was exported to the international market.

(2) Vivergo & Ensus lobbied successfully for 10% ethanol blends in UK, even though UK is more and more often a net importer of wheat. #Biofuels are fundamentally the wrong solution to transport emissions!

I listened to that. It's a pity the BBC don't do a "PetChems Today" as I don't think Ensus, Vivergo and the 100's directly and indirectly employed will be able to redirect with quite the same ease.
