🔥 James Baldwin: The Fire Next Time 🔥
My portrait of Baldwin — poet, activist, revolutionary. His words still cut, still heal, still demand we move.

"Ignorance, allied with power, is the most ferocious enemy justice can have."

James Baldwin lit a fire in me when I finally read The Fire Next Time in 2016.

This Pride Month, I’m honoring his legacy as a Black, queer icon and how his words still shape my purpose.

I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.

This also another attempt to start a race war and they might succeed if they start segregating.

#TheFireNextTime wasn't so much of a difficult read as it was an emotional one. It brought to a boil a myriad of complex emotions that had been simmering for a while. Baldwin's eloquence helped solidify and give form to feelings that ranged from fear and helplessness, to outrage and incredulity. 1/3

I was a white high school student already questioning the indoctrination I was receiving as a 'christian' in a white neighborhood. By the time I graduated, I had rejected most of it. I knew Baldwin from the news, but reading #TheFireNextTime, relieved much of the guilt I was made to feel at the time.

I am reading #thefirenexttime at a snails pace.
Baldwin has nailed race relations in this country. And I’m spending a lot of time contemplating all of it.
It really sucks undertstanding things with a clear lens.

What does this quote from the letter to his nephew mean to you?

"But no one's hand can wipe away those tears he sheds invisibly today, which one hears in his laughter and in his speech and in his songs."
