i’m posting a section of an article i’m writing that reframes the social politics of personality disorders. i write about the intersectional underpinning of the lives of those diagnosed with personality disorders. the alt text is cut off for each picture. the cut off text is in the thread below.
Vulnerability derives from the Latin word vulnerare, which means “to wound.” Wounds are an inherent possibility within the fragile processes of becoming through which we all live, grow, interrelate and die. All forms of life are susceptible to wounds and display them differently: some hide them, others bare or perform their hurt. A third type of display is more contrived and technological. It seeks to excise wounds from existence, developing ever more novel ways to control, regulate, divert and channel hurt away from an honest reckoning with its presence and uneven distribution, thereby eliminating critical analyses of pain that identify how our dominant mode of production, consumption and power hurts all life on Earth. PwPD wounds reveal something deeply vulnerable about how we inhabit multiple, contradictory experiences at once. Yet our wounds, what I refer to as incongruent vulnerabilities, also reveal something deeply vulnerable and troubling about the world across multiple registers. The world blames us as a way of looking away from its own hurt—how it undermines its own future. We embody proliferative hurt that exceeds what the world can accept because it destabilizes the fragile rationale on which the world relies to sustain the intolerable realities through which political privilege, economic profit and social benefit are determined and distributed. On the register of trauma and abuse, it is a hackneyed story. Many pwPDs were abused or deeply hurt as children, often by parents and caregivers. We developed wounds that have irrecoverably shaped and formed us. Our incongruent vulnerabilities are filtered through moralistic apprehension and behavioral assessment in ways that absolve society of its failure to protect us as children. The proper interpretation of our lives as telling stories of systemic child abuse and oppression is reversed and transmogrified into individualized pathological conditions. I cannot rely on others to use this knowledge compassionately because the reification of borderline personality disorder is the dominant way in which borderline is produced and experienced. Reification is a term in Marxist theory that refers to the process by which complex histories and relations are perceived as inherent attributes of the people involved in them. Throughout my childhood, I was immersed in a multiplicity of relations, temporalities and forces. Shaped equally by Indian upper-caste practices of arranged marriage and the displacement generated by global immigration flows of the 1980s, my parents were conditioned by thick social and cultural histories, including Maratha cultural legacies of hypermasculinity. These cultural and social relations provided fertile ground for my father’s abuse, which I experienced as a child. His misogyny and heterosexism, combined with relations of compulsory able-bodiedness and able-mindedness, enveloped and violently repressed my developmentally disabled, queer, trans self. Borderline is the name given to the vulnerabilities that materialized through histories of partition, immigrant displacement, and the intermingling of cultural imaginaries of caste, masculinity, normalcy, ethnicity and religion, as well as through the mutual entailment of specific relations and forces of compulsory heterosexuality and compulsory able-bodiedness and able-mindedness. Yet despite this, people today do not experience my vulnerabilities as attributes of these temporalities, histories, relations and forces. Instead, they experience them as attributes of my behavior, personality, and moral disposition. Reification functions as a convenient tactic that absolves others of ethical attention to my history of trauma and to the power relations that produce and sustain my wounds. These days, when I face ableist devaluation or violence, my consciousness flips into a distraught, overwhelmed “not again,” recalling my flesh’s accumulated memories of ableist harm. Borderline is not a pattern of behavior, but the narrative that begins with an oversaturated history of subjugating violence. Borderline and other personality disorders are testimonies to the truths of living beings as they face the unthinkable. No pwPD is only a pwPD. Intersectional feminist perspectives in social theory inform the claim that no woman is simply a woman. Instead, the normativity of the category itself is fractured and destabilized by multiple asymmetries of power, including race, class, ethnicity, nation, ability, sexuality, cissexuality, age, appearance and more. Similarly, an intersectional perspective on the category of personality disorders elucidates that none of us are merely diagnosed with personality disorders, as if the diagnosis is separate from the concrete social relations and systems through which it manifests and is produced. A discursive tactic conflates pwPDs with the normate, the idealized, imaginary figure of the individual unmarked by difference and Otherness. As a result, we are imagined as emblems of power rather than as its casualties. An intersectional approach attends to the fact that PDs often surface from the specific social realities of structural abuse, violence and subjugation during childhood. Conflating pwPDs with the normate renders us as deserving of violence and unworthy of liberation, since we are defined solely by ahistorical and depoliticized behaviors rather than by the complex vulnerabilities that develop over a lifetime living at the intensified intersections of power. In my view, personality disorders mark warrior-casualty status. Audre Lorde reminded us that not only were we never meant to survive in this system, but that we are both casualties and warriors within it.

IFF researchers seek to design complex agroforestry systems that emulate the regenerative cycles and evolutionary adaptations of natural forests, a goal which challenges the dominant temporalities of industrial agriculture and modernist development. Yet these aspirations are continually reshaped by the fast tempos and short horizons of scientific institutions and donor organizations. Drawing on environmental humanities scholarship, I argue that agroforestry science is animated by temporal empathy—an attentiveness to the temporalities of more-than-human worlds—but that this empathy is systematically constrained by institutional regimes of speed, measurement, and impact. Through case studies of agroforestry projects in China and Myanmar, I trace how scientists negotiate the dissonance between ecological time and developmental or donor time, and I show how their work both reproduces and contests neoliberal logics of value and progress. I propose temporal empathy not only as a feature of environmental science but also as a method for science and technology studies: as a mode of inquiry that can help us to apprehend, and potentially find common cause with, the aspirations and frustrations of scientists striving to imagine more livable futures.
