Yesterday I read Robin Wall Kimmerer’s “Skywoman Falling” to my students. I wasn’t prepared for how soothing it was for many of them to be physically read to along with the story itself.

Staring down. Skywoman. Doesn't even note the pointy ears.

Whilst dusting himself off, he nods.

"Is tough. Too big. Heavy. Need learn how to climb."

Weird Skywoman.

The towering stonemason lowers his menhir, engravings shining in pandoran light.

Gray skin, apart from the blue of other Na'vi, contrasts the obsidian plate cape as he turns to her.

"Odd skywoman- no gun, no."

He gestures a trigger, his accent ~>

Black farmers make up a small fraction of all family farms, because their land was taken away time after time. Chris Brown @skywoman can fill you in on the history and why he had to start his own farm without having inherited land
The reason that these Black-owned farms are able to do this is because they never go the subsidies the white farmers did this. And when Biden tried to correct this, the white farmers got mad. But now the Black-farmers are not being hurt as bad by Trump's policies. Reverse Uno Card here.
From North Carolina to Mississippi, Black-owned farms are filling the gaps left by SNAP funding delays

Reading the passage in Robin Wall Kimmerer's "Braiding Sweetgrass" where Eve meets Skywoman. Now I'm pondering through a Jewish lens if Chava is Eve to a Potawatomi woman. Maybe she is the same woman. But if she is not, what sorts of conversations have or can happen between Chava and Skywoman?

Yesterday was Twahyahnekílha (Strawberry Ceremony) back at home. Each June, we celebrate and give thanks to the leader of the plants, awʌ́hihteʼ (wild strawberry), brought to our world by Skywoman. The berries, leaves & roots are medicine for our people. Make your own awʌ́hihteʼ drink (simple recipe)!

“when Skywoman arrived here, she did not come alone. She was pregnant. Knowing her grandchildren would inherit the world she left behind, she did not work for flourishing in her time only. It was through her actions of reciprocity, the give and take with the land, that the original immigrant ... 1/

Spent some time at the Renwick Gallery in DC today. Yesterday, my students and I were comparing Skywoman Falling and Eve myths. I like this version of Eve. ❤️

This week in teaching: Introducing students to native North American religious traditions. Assigned small sections of Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass. Thinking about Skywoman and Kimmerer's questions about what lessons we can learn from her to become Indigenous to the places we live.

1/2 Hi @tomkimmerer.bsky.social , me again. I wanted to take a moment to actually write something rather than just copying and pasting like an automaton as we've interacted before and I wanted to convey my earnestness. The Great Spirit and Skywoman sacrifice so much and give us priceless gifts.

Can they, can we all, understand the Skywoman story not as an artifact from the past but as instructions for the future? Can a nation of immigrants once again follow her example to become native, to make a home?
