my view on shuji is that he isn't a character. With my specific reading of the show, shuji is just a stand-in for the franchise of gundam as a whole. Viewed like that I think he's great, but if I were to view him as a character instead? yeah he'd suck, agreed.

I need to clarify: I am not a gcucks hater. I really liked the rest of the show. All of my ire is leveled at its final episode and shuji as a character.
time to beat a dead horse but: as time marches on I find myself growing more and more sour on Gcucks and it really is all resting on its ending and Shuji.
Oh and the fucking baffling exclusion of Amuro save for bringing the one aspect of him no one wanted back: his VA.

and like. I do not find the "mystery" shuji offers to be charming at all. he is the only mystery left at the end of the show and its a baffling one. I know theres meta text shit (meta stuff that IMO got in the way of the actual compelling story) but it ends up meaning fucking nothing.

Over time I think I’ve softened on gqux to the point where I got a hg of the red gundam for char, although I think gqux makes him too cool. He needs to be more pathetic and desperate like in the tomino gundams. And shuji felt more like a plot device than a character most of the time

GQX seems to buy into the idea that newtypes are created through and strengthened by traumatic experiences. this is true for nyaan, challia, shuji, and lalah (xavier as well probably), machu’s trauma is never addressed and in fact shes called out for being spoiled multiple times it doesnt make sense
