Critical Mangrove Forests in the Arabian Gulf Face Significant Threats, Study Says
Researchers at the University of Sharjah warn that critical mangrove forests across the Gulf region are facing significant threats. These mangrove forests sustain marine biodiversity, serve as a source of food, supply timber and tannins and play a critical role in soil formation, nutrient cycling, and maintaining ecosystem balance. In the Arabian Gulf, a recent assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies mangrove ecosystems as vulnerable, noting a 14.3% decline in total mangrove area since 1996.
