Woman had her twin brother's XY chromosomes---but only in her blood. Her skin cell karyotype was XX. Doctors identified her condition as chimerism, in which the body contains at least two different sets of DNA across different cells. #sexchromosomes

Diagnostic dilemma: Woman had her twin brother's XY chromosomes — but only in her blood
Doctors discovered a woman had "blood chimerism" after examining the chromosomes of cells from different parts of her body.

My first first-author article is finally here! Happy to share with you a little piece of the puzzle in the evolution of sex chromosomes in chameleons of the genus Furcifer. You can read the full text at academic.oup.com/jhered/advan...

Comparison of non-synonymous/synonymous (dN/dS) ratios shows little evidence for a faster-Z effect in Furcifer chameleons after controlling for gene-specific evolutionary rates
Abstract. The faster-X/Z effect hypothesis states that genes linked to X/Z chromosomes should accumulate mutations faster than autosomal genes. Although fa

A single theory for the evolution of sex chromosomes and the two rules of speciation
Sex chromosomes are involved in three major empirical patterns: (i) Y (or W) chromosomes are often nonrecombining and degenerate; (ii) heterogametic offspring (XY or ZW) from interspecific crosses are...

Okuno et al. assemble male genomes of three spiny rat species, tracing Y chromosome loss and gene translocation. Authors show that segmental duplications and rearrangements enabled preservation of Y-linked genes on the X.

Researcher Carla Crossman was doing genetic analysis of skin samples from #rightwhales, and found that one individual had #XXY #sexchromosomes

I think this is really cool, and don't know why more people aren't talking about it
Further coverage, this time from @iflscience.com, of the discovery of a southern right whale with XXY sex chromosomes.

If you read to the end of this quote thread, you'll see that I started with a link to the journal article about Carla's discovery.

Sex chromosomes never disappoint! Amazing work by @shrewgod.bsky.social @ruthfcarden.bsky.social and collaborators on the importance of #SexChromosomes for reconstructing past demographic events! Wow!!!🦌
A whopping 144 red deer genomes from across their range shows how markers with different modes of inheritance (e.g. the sex chromosomes) capture different signals from isolation in glacial refugia. The X chromosome is a useful marker in this context! academic.oup.com/mbe/article/...
