#sacoglossan
It is!! Some sacoglossan sea slugs can decapitate themselves as a defense mechanism. The body then regrows from the head!

Sacoglossan sea slugs are so fucking cool

This photosynthetic magic trick allows for the big finale: some sacoglossan sea slugs can detach their own heads from their body (which contains the gut!) & live on photosynthesis for a few weeks while the body regrows from the head!

The body, unfortunately, cannot grow a new head.

Many members of the sacoglossan sea slug family are adapted to a kleptoplastic lifestyle, allowing them to (inefficiently) photosynthesize for brief periods when food is scarce.

But turning an animal cell into a plant cell is not a trivial task. Plants are specially adapted to keep chloroplasts.
Photosynthesis: On the art of stealing chloroplasts
Sea slugs increase the longevity of the chloroplasts they steal from algae by limiting the harmful side-effects of photosynthesis.

Solar-Powered Thieves: New Study Uncovers Animal Organelle That Sustains Photosynthesis from Stolen Chloroplasts - Harvard University - Department of Molecular & Cellular Biology
They look like crawling leaves, but these sea slugs are anything but ordinary. MCB Professor Nick Bellono calls them “the weirdest animal we’ve ever studied”—a bold claim from […]

if you don't know what a sacoglossan is, they're a type of sea slug that "steal" chloroplasts from the plants they eat, and they use them to photosynthesise. like, they actually photosynthesise in a way that is essential to their survival - some of them can survive on nothing but light for months!!

Yes and no.

Yes because it makes sense that Sofia would spin stuff off for liability reasons; no because I haven't thought of anything she'd trust anyone enough to hand her technology to.

She has a few test cases in progress though like the Rescale Salon and her Sacoglossan trade deal.

I imagine both Apidaet and Sacoglossan societies incorporate alot of intentional vertically into their architecture and the horizontal "ground floor," design of modern cities feels very weird to them.
