Every routine action a casual flyer with Ryanair may want to do is currently supported by the ryanair.com web site. This includes check-in and retrieval of the boarding pass. I wonder why Ryanair would force passengers to install an app on their 'phones rather than facilitating their access to the web site from their 'phones. The main difference between a web site and an app is relevant, I suspect: apps get access to far more details about a phone than websites can get, and these details are very often used to build profiles on those 'phone users. Location and movement profiles, for example, such as those featured in the recent exposé Prime Time TV programme. As a designer -- and a user -- of IT systems I have come to learn a very simple truth: an organisation that makes changes that cause obvious inconvenience to their customers, and yet declares that the changes are only to make things better, is hiding the true intent of those changes, and therefore should not be trusted. Finally, Ryanair seems to forget who the smartphone belongs to. They very much have a right to decide who may board their flights, and who may not. By the same token, however, every 'phone user has a right to decide what apps may be installed and may run on their 'phone. Forcing an app on users is abusive, especially when it's unnecessary, and one wonders why Ryanair wants to risk that perception. What's in it for Ryanair?

“If you want to know how a model will behave, the only way of doing it is to run it,” Mensch also suggested. “You do need to have some empirical testing, what’s happening. Knowing the input data that has been used for training is not going to tell you whether your model is going to behave well in [a healthcare use-case], for instance. You don’t really care about what’s in the training data. You do care about the empirical behaviour of the model. So you don’t need knowledge of the training data. And if you had knowledge of the training data, it wouldn’t even teach you whether the model is going to behave well or not. So this is why I’m saying it’s neither necessary nor sufficient.”

When her son, Jonathan Savitsky, 21, was killed on October 7 while defending the Kissufim army post near the Gaza border, it took two days for his body to be identified. Then, when “soldiers came to our house to tell us the news, Jonathan had already been dead for 48 hours,” she recounted. At the time, the Health Ministry had not yet removed the need for court approval for parents to request posthumous sperm retrieval, so Savitsky went through that process, losing another 10 hours. By the time the sperm was extracted by doctors at the sperm bank at Shamir Medical Center, “it had been 70 hours and the sperm was not viable anymore,” she said. The process made her think, “Why? Why did it take so long? What can I do?” When asked if Savitsky believed that her son would have wanted to have posthumous sperm retrieval, she said that based on the answers of young men similar to her son, “he would say that it’s not optimal, but he would understand my situation. He would know that I would be heartbroken and depressed, so he would say yes, because he loved me and knew that I could be a good grandmother to his child.” The fact that the procedure has been done for 250 fallen soldiers, including Levy’s fiancé, Silberg, is a good thing, Savitsky said. But she pointed out that almost 900 soldiers were killed in the war, “and for those men, we’ll never know what they would have wanted.” “They never had the chance because nobody asked them,” she said. “They are leaving the world without continuity of themselves. It’s very sad.” In addition, Savitsky stressed the importance of asking the soldiers themselves how they feel about the procedure. Her study found that 47% of the men said they would oppose posthumous sperm retrieval use by their parents. More than 30% would oppose a partner doing so. “It is crucial to ask men these questions while they are still alive,” she wrote in the paper.
