A study from the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources found that deer scrapes on the ground and rubs on trees radiate a photoluminescence, or glow, under ultraviolet light. The glow may help deer to leave messages for potential mates!

## Surface Passivation of CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots Using Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) for Enhanced Photoluminescence Quantum Yield and Stability in Bioimaging Applications
**Abstract:** This paper outlines a novel approach to enhancing the performance of Cadmium Selenide/Zinc Sulfide (CdSe/ZnS) core-shell quantum dots (QDs) for bioimaging applications through optimized surface passivation using tailored self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). We detail a rigorous methodology for selecting and characterizing SAMs – specifically, thiols functionalized with polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivatives and amine groups – to minimize surface defects, reduce non-radiative recombination pathways, and improve QD stability in physiological environments.

“The glow is an example of photoluminescence, a property widely found in nature in which organic material absorbs light and re-emits it at longer wavelengths—shifting ultraviolet (UV) light into our visible range, for example.”

Deer urine glows in the dark during mating season, & likely a way for animals to locate each other

Do other animals use photoluminescence of their urine, poop, or other bodily fluids to interact w/each other?
