A3 God is doing due diligence to see if the actions of the people of Sodom really warrant annihilation of the city. #ParshaChat

oh yes, you can tell in novels, but in ancient texts they're likely to contract their traditional politeness-dance, whatever it is. because "everybody knows"

A0: Shabbat shalom! Very grateful, as a teacher and just as a human, for the long weekend break going on. A gift to take my time doing things and resting for a few days. #ParshaChat

I'm back! spaghetti sauce on the simmer at last (7-8 dinners' worth, 21-24 servings). Mine has both meat & ALL the veg, enough so that a single serving+noodles is a full meal. worth the work, only possible w/super food processor to dice veg

A1: It also occurs to me that the level of obsequies language that Abraham was using would also be rude in most English-speaking contexts these days. It's just coming on a little too strong or something, it would make me feel like I was about to be scammed. #ParshaChat

A2: And assuming that it *was* going to be apparent to Abraham that God did it, how would advance warning help? Maybe to give Abraham a chance to raise objections and to give God a chance to hear him out about any possible objections? #ParshaChat

A1 The easiest one for me is why Abraham would argue with God to spare the cities. Both justice and mercy point in that direction. But still, if we care about people, what about the ones the Sodom dwellers used to destroy? Who’s speaking for them? #ParshaChat

A2: Maybe! But that still leaves me with the question of why it would arise as a possibility to be rejected. Like, presumably God had a lot going on that Abraham *wasn't* privy to, especially not in advance.
Why the warning in this case? On account of Lot?

And how does Lot understand the shenanigans Abram pulls with Sarai and Pharaoh? How does it influence his decision to leave his uncle and go settle in Sodom (and the way Lot regards his neighbors there)? I have no idea! #ParshaChat

Yes!

One example I'm thinking of is the difference between segregation being illegal vs being legally mandated. #ParshaChat

A3: That seems like an important lesson to learn, and I also feel like "man is corrupt from his youth" is a fairly depressing formulation of it. I'm wondering what it would look like to simultaneously maintain awareness that people can be good and that flawed people can do good things. #ParshaChat

A0: I'm wondering if others in #ParshaChat want to continue to explore safety-related themes for a while, or if people are interested in a new theme for a new year. I'm leaning towards the former since I don't think we've done this theme with this part of the Torah. But open to suggestions!
