Grey snowy tulips for a grey snowy day in Toronto today. I called these ghost tulips while I was painting them but once it was completed I gave it a more literal title - Tulips, Dark White. It feels serene, wistful and sometimes a little unsettling but I still love it.

Large painting 36x40, vertical. Dark blue background, five white tulips in dark light. Only the edges of some the petals catch the light. The tulips and some leaves are in a dark white/grey vase, barrel shaped with a flared opening and vertical ridges running top to bottom. The texture is smooth, the strokes of colour extend beyond the edges of the shapes of blossoms, leaves and vase. The mood is sombre, peaceful and a little unhinged.

Fluttering cosmos, their petals look like fingers that beckon and wave. These ones grew on my balcony and amused me all summer long as they danced in the wind.

Day 8 of #ArtAdventCalendar During a particularly difficult time in my life, I decided to paint flowers to cheer myself up. At the time it felt peaceful and serene. Now I can see the darkness that still surrounded me. Even in the title - Tulips, Dark White.

Fall walks lead to those lovely floating leaf and petal moments that I’ve been inspired by lately! This painting had a subtle “The Creation of Adam” shape with the pink drifting down to graze the blue 🌸💙

During a dark time, I decided to paint flowers to cheer myself up. Miley Cyrus' I Can Buy Myself Flowers played in the studio. I chuckle now looking at my "cheerful" paintings from that era. Says something about my life then that cheerful was still pretty dark.

Back in '23 I painted more flowers than at any other time in my life. A full 50% of my work was flowers. In hindsight I can see I was trying to cheer myself up after a year of hard hits. And it worked. I got through it.
