#pCO₂
Looks like “serious adverse events” were driven almost entirely by ventilator issues (high peak pressures, interruptions in ventilation, etc) but without clinically significant impact on oxygenation, pH, or pCO2. Unclear how much clinical impact making this change would have.

Continuous sterane and phytane δ13C record reveals a substantial pCO2 decline since the mid-Miocene - Nature Communications
Molecular fossils from marine phytoplankton reveal a substantial decline in CO2 values over the past 15 million years and may support higher climate sensitivity than previously reported.

The study explores a new way to estimate ancient atmospheric CO₂ levels using chemical signals preserved in conodonts. It shows that differences in carbon isotopes between these fossils and surrounding rocks track major climate shifts during a key period as Earth moved from a warm to an icy climate

And since someone's going to ask, this is the first paper we put out on this, almost a decade ago now. Probably about time to revisit the topic.

one of the biggest differences is sodium load-- bicarb pushes in the states are 8.4% sodium which is a huge osmotic load. More to the point in acidosis, there is more dissolved pCO2 in the fast pushed amp than in the slow infusion (50meq/50cc vs 150meq/1000cc).

The weathering feedback, how reaction with rock balances out athmospheric pCO2, is usually considered mostly a land-atmosphere interaction. But the ions from that weatherig ends up in the ocean, and affect its capacity to absorb CO2 as well. 🧪⚒️🌊

ABG is the gold standard, but arterial sticks hurt & carry risks. A Kidney360 study (5,419 paired samples) derived formulas to estimate arterial pH, pCO₂ & HCO₃⁻ from VBG—meeting acceptable clinical expectations. #Nephrology #CriticalCare #AcidBase

🧪 Why?
This outcome follows directly from marine CO₂ chemistry: under constant atmospheric pCO₂, even substantial increases in alkalinity lead to only small changes in pH and carbonate ion concentration.
