214 The third choice Snowden made, and the choice that most effectively defined him to the public, was to reveal himself as the man behind the leak in a video in Hong Kong. He not only identified himself as the person who stole the government documents published by the Guardian and Washington Post, but he incriminated himself further on camera by allowing Poitras to film him actually disclosing NSA’s secret operations to Greenwald. By disclosing classified data to Greenwald, an unauthorized person, he intentionally burned his bridges. What makes this choice intriguing is that there was no evident need for him to expose himself in this way. If he merely wanted to be a whistle-blower, he could have, as Bradley Manning did, anonymously sent the documents to journalists as “Citizen 4.” In fact, in late May 2013, that was exactly what he did. He sent Barton Gellman the PRISM scoop anonymously which the Washington Post published on June 6", 2013. In that scoop, Snowden’s name was not revealed. He also sent Greenwald and Poitras documents while he was still the anonymous source “Citizen 4.” Neither Gellman nor Greenwald had suggested the need for a face-to-face meeting with Snowden. Even after he had revealed his true identity to Poitras and Greenwald on June 2™ 2013, Guardian editor Ewen MacAskill offered him the option of remaining an unnamed source for the stories. He said, as he later told Vanity Fair. “You should remain anonymous; the stories are just as good without you.” However, anonymity was not part of Snowden’s long game. The reason he gave Greenwald in Hong Kong for going public in this way was to avoid any suspicion falling on his co-workers at the NSA. Yet, if merely wanted to take sole responsibility for stealing state secrets, he did not need to be the subject of a documentary. He could have simply allowed Greenwald to identify him by name as the source in the stories. That would not present an issue since he had not been identified by either name or

My homie continued, followed by me Homie: There was also this implication that Verso like the piece of his soul didn't want to stick around in this way that felt like it needed to be fleshed out more. Cause the only bits we get of it are Renoir's interpretation of the Axon and the very last bits of dialogue about them both being tired. Me: Nah, I'm with you still, and as I was getting toward the end, I was like, "Nah, Verso is right" and I initially picked his ending. But the more I mulled over it, the more I was like, "ehhh, does this really work for me?" For me, it comes down to writers trying to force a theme and a point for their story at the expense of everything else they built, I think. Like, there's logical sense to it when they tell us the piece of his soul didn't want to be there, but then it means only Verso mattered, and once l'm looking at Verso as a god, I can no longer agree with that, even if that's what the writers want me to think. Like I mentioned I don't think I would've made the same decisions if I was writing about grief. My main gripe as I'm thinking more is literally just we didn't get enough time with the family to understand their grief. If this is the theme of the story we spend way more time understanding the expeditions grief then we ever do with the family and that's a flaw especially if you're gonna commit to two paths. like even siding with Verso it still sucks that Sciel never gets a real resolution with Pierre, Gustave's sacrifice loses so much meaning, and Lune ends up feeling underbaked when they're like the "real characters" that we get to know. Both routes come up short a bit. if they were gonna commit to the two endings I wish they both felt as fleshed out as the other. But I guess it could be interesting. Especially since they've already robbed the emotion from some of the story beats anyway. Homie: I just wanna know what's the beef and why Clea is so invested cause Renoir seems dismissive of it. Me: True. Makes me wonder if they're even responsible for Verso's death, or if the story is just trying to tell us that it was actually a random fire and Clea is grieving and blaming it on them. I also thought about the ableism angle with Maelle, but I didn't know how to contend with It

Tommy Boy (continuring): "... knocked up. I've seen it a hundred times." And he puts a LOT of mustard, actually on all of this, but especially especially 'a HUNDRED times,' and it's fucking hysterical. No one can or could do what he could do. Here, we get Richard, or more likely, David Spade trying not to break at "I've seen it a HUNDRED times." Ted has listened, and oddly enough, Tommy has been speaking his language. Not OURS. It's fucking absolute nonsense to any of us. What the FUCK is he even saying?? ... but TED knows exactly what he's saying, and by the way, Ted's locked in, and he's got follow-up questions about the glue-sniffing fairy story. "But why do they put a guarantee on the box, then?" IT'S BONKERS, but they're having a back-and-forth dialogue, and Tommy is INTRIGUING this guy. He has PIQUED Ted's interest. Ted's obviously a Wacko, but probably a harmless, affable one, and by the way, he's about to buy his brake pads from Callahan.

27. The Angle of the Dangle- this was another mAUnth stories that didn't get over the line that I WILL finish. This one's based on real history of British censorship in the 70s, featuring mathematician Stede and filmmaker Ed trying to find their way around the new rules.
There are some days Stede Bonnet wonders exactly how he arrived at this particular moment in his life, in this particular job, facing problems like this one. Specifically, the fairly erect problem that’s frozen on his flickering television screen, the VCR tape paused at the… critical moment, as it were. It’s a penis, yes. A human penis, a lovely one, if that’s not too weird a thing to think. Is it? Stede can appreciate the aesthetics, at least: good length, uncut, standing proudly up from swirls of dark hair, above thighs that have an intriguing number of tattoos visible. It’s the angle of the dangle that counts, though, toward whether this penis is bureaucratically too much, or just enough. Stede sits back down in his ever-squeaky office chair and sighs, tipping his head back to stare at the water-stained ceiling of this basement room instead. The thing is. Stede is a mathematician, and Stede knows his angles. That’s exactly why he’s here at the British Board of Film Classification in the censoring unit, and this particular human penis is precisely why he was hired, or at least the possibility of it was. And now the possibility has been made reality, and Stede’s about to justify his existence as the man who measures the angle. The Rule, Chauncey Badminton had told him on his first day, is that the angle of the erect penis on the screen must be no greater than that of the Mull of Kintyre. Not just the headland but the whole peninsula, that jut of land extending out from the coast of Scotland at an angle of oh, about twenty degrees from the mainland. Nudity is permitted for a general audience, within the appropriate rating. But full-frontal male nudity must not exceed that degree, and if it does, Stede is the person who must decline to allow it. He’s alone down here. He’s fairly confident that was the intent, that they’d shuffle him off to this office, bury him before he’s even dead, and never hear from him again. And now he’s got his first chance to make a useful contribution, and he… well. He doesn’t want to, is the thing. He slides his chair closer to the television. Leans in to observe the angle again. It’s solidly a hundred and thirty degrees extended, well past the Mull of Kintyre, surely having knocked Islay out into the North Atlantic. Objectively, mathematically, this penis is too erect for television.

The Cleverest Thing I've Read on this Site by Hiria Dunning This novel is exactly my jam. First things first, (and I know I'm going to come off as a snob, but) this is solid, rich, well-crafted prose. I've read too many things on online platforms which are inaccessible to me because they read like they were written by children. This is the sort of writing where you know the writer is studied, confident, and thoughtful about hitting the Publish button. I appreciate not having my time wasted. This story is clever, in a very real, deep way. I've never read anything quite like it, in terms of how the characters speak about scholarly or philosophical subjects, but it all still actually works as readable and engaging storytelling (I've read plenty of didactic stuff which just falls flat - this is NOT that). I certainly could never write like this, and if I were younger and more impressionable I would probably envy and try to copy L.J. Amber's style (but I'm settled and happy with who I am as a writer ^_^ so I can just enjoy this for the fact it exists). I'm very okay with the pacing of this. This won't work for everyone, but for me, the slowness of the plot gives time for great detail in the characters, world, magic system; but more than all of that, for a deep dive into Saphienne's psychology. In the current mainstream publishing world, everything is go go go, make sure you start with action and get the reader immediately invested! But I'm tired of that, and also I don't think action is the only way to do that. This story got me invested in its own quieter manner, and now I'm hooked. There is comedy and tragedy here, wonder, and, I sense underneath it all, horrors yet to come. I cannot wait for more! If you like writing which is rich, characters who are built with delightfully slow deliberation, a believable world full of detail and wonder, and a story with many layers to it, this is where it's at. Elves done right by wearing black Short explanation: it is good. Really really good For the long explanation: The Elf who would become a dragon is not a story filled with violent rage and a thirdt for destructive revenge or anything of the sort. In essence it is about Saphienne and how her life developed over time, into what she will eventually become. As such it is by necessity a slower story, but one that is definitely worth the time. As we follow Saphienne through her life we see her emotional struggles with the people around her but also her intellect (which by the way is excellently written, making her competence actually believable in a way few writeres, especially here on RR, can match) Likewise the magic system is equally mysterious, as of time of writing, but at the same time wonderfully intriguing, making both Saphienne and us the reader equally enthralled by it. Lastly, what I like the most is the way that elves are treated, not as just unaging humans with a penchant for magic but as an interely different species alltogether, with an entirely different culture that seems botjh utterly alien but entirely understandable at the same time (while also not denying that they to, posess serious flaws) This is one of the rare few times where elves are properly awarded the respect that they ought to have and it makes this story all the greater for it. So goo read it, it is reall really good Very high quality, in all respects. by insoluble As per the title, this is a very high quality piece of writing. While the plot is still in its infancy, I have been hooked pretty much since the beginning. The characters all feel real, though I am not the best judge of this, and so far everything seems thoroughly planned and researched. The grammar and style have been close to perfect as far as I’m concerned. In terms of the story itself, the main character naturally comes across as very intelligent but also fallible, not least because at this stage she is in fact a child. At the moment, we are seeing her formative years and the clear impact they are having on her. I am not quite sure how to assign a genre to the fiction, which is a personal failing. There are times which are similar to mystery/detective works, where the mc will bring together seemingly disparate information in a way that is logical, but there is also currently a focus on her making friends and having adventures / just having friends. To summarise, this is definitely worth reading. Came for dragons, stayed for the writing by Some_Random_Cultivator Look, dragons & Elves = yum yum gimmie more story. But this isn't that. Oh gods no, it's a delicate, deeply-disturbed tale of a one person's discovery into who they are, using their skills of observation, investigation and philosophy of life and those around them. This isn't number go up, this is discussion and introspection over what makes a being, nature versus nurture and the whole really messy part of being an actual person amongst people. It's all "show, don't tell" to don't turn off your brain, you'll be needing it and a good sit and stare at the wall with some of the fun that unfolds. Light reading, deep concepts and an engaging story. Read it - do yourself a favour.

Review: Just finished "The Great and Secret Show" by Clive Barker. The story was intriguing with some cool twists, but it felt way too long and dragged in a lot of places. Worth a read if you’re patient, but not exactly a page-turner. 3* 📚💙

(4/6) Okay, the front end. Mixed feelings. Certain angles I really like this, other angles it's a bit more meh. The embossed grille structure and logo placement are interesting, but I'm not in love with the headlights. The ground effects are cool, but the bonnet is maybe too slab-like.
The car has a monolithic appearance, statuesque even. The purple rocks here and in the ad gave me heavy sci-fi vibes, but now I get that it's more like granite that's been chiseled away to create this slab of metal. More interesting is how curvaceous the side and rear end are, especially those wide hips in the back, yet the front end is squared and hard-edged. A deliberate mashing of design ethos, an attempt at elegance combined with brutalism. Jaguar has stated their intention is "exuberant modernism," which I guess means simplicity and cleanliness, yet at the same time they're making a pass that attacks regular design conventions by trying to merge two conflicting ideas. We've seen this before, like with the Pontiac Aztek, which has mercilessly ridiculed ever since. We've seen too many angles like the Alfa Romeo SZ, and we've seen too many curves and bulbs like the Fiat Multipla. And now we have a car at a much higher price point trying to take on the same daunting challenge.... ....and one has to ask themselves, "Do I like it?" Some will find it off-putting, some won't. I find it very intriguing, personally. Look here, with the square "grille" against the curb of the front fascia quarter panel piece thing. The sharp angles of the headlight and chin splitter. Most will probably respond with "What were they thinking?" Others, more curious or adventurous perhaps, may wonder aloud "Why has no one thought of this before?" Only, as far as the latter should be concenred, this has been tried before. And it never really worked. Combining these elements always make a divisive looking car, and maybe someone in the comments will engage with me and point out some similar design exercises that did work out. This is a car designed with road presence in mind, and sometimes that mean bizarre, Hail Mary design attempts like the (frankly, hideous) BMW XM and Tesla Cybertruck. And now there's this. Grilles are interesting when it comes to EVs. They don't need one since they don't have an engine. Grilles as we know them became brand call signs of a sort, but they came from the days when your radiator was the front of your car. Later they were repurposed into feeding air into various engine components. Now with no radiator and no engine, one has to wonder what becomes of that front end that in many ways became a bill board for the brand, or even a design statement. We can go on forever talking about the most attractive grilles. Afterall, it's one of the most visible parts of the car. Tesla decided to forgo them entirely, but being an early EV, the porpoise nose-shaped front-end of a Tesla has become something of a brand hallmark itself. Jag has opted for something fairly simple, but I like the logo placement, and for once the simplified text logo looks at home somewhere. Sue me if you disagree, but I think it sort of works here. Even if by itself the logo could be a lot better. Love the brass vs blue color contrast though. It's alien from the front. But that may be because it lacks mirrors. The test mule we've seen track photos of, possibly called the I-Type, has regular mirrors attached too it. So the slab sides of the Type 00 are concept car fantasy, even if way back when the E-Type first came out, it wasn't exactly uncommon to find sporty British cars lacking any mirrors on the outside whatsoever. A quirk of the time, I suppose. Who needs to look back when you can look forward?
