We rigged up the test #MotusWTS #sensrognome receiver today and yesterday to look at range and see where we should put the real thing at Stala and Kartong Bird Observatory. Did some walk tests with the tag - channelling my inner nightingale!

More Motus #MotusWTS - this time on European Blackbirds! @birdscanada.bsky.social
NEW PAPER: determinants of stopover duration in migratory blackbirds: lean birds extend stopovers, immune status has a weak effect. Weather conditions (cloud cover, tailwinds) are more influential.

An impressive amount of data from 1 Skylark! Again, showing the effectiveness and versatility of Motus!

#MotusWTS
A skylark I tagged last autumn in northernmost Germany with a #Motus transmitter (to study #pesticide effects) was now detected near our University in Oldenburg - we @migecol.bsky.social col.bsky.social now have data from 3 migration seasons for this bird!

A scientific milestone once considered impossible.
Huge gratitude to all of our partners from 2023 to today: #CMPASC, #MotusWTS, @birdscanada.bsky.social, @xercessociety.bsky.social and the incredible community of researchers who made this dream real. We've only just begun! 🦋

For example, it helps us understand which habitats birds overwinter in and use during migration, providing a good insight into avian ecology. You can find out more about #MotusWTS at motus.org

Very excited to finally say it's online!! New paper in @society4conbio.bsky.social Conservation Biology on how we can use #MotusWTS automated VHF across Europe to understand more about flyways and our declining migratory species.
We hope this will push more collaboration across the continent!

Really nice info on one of the coolest migration stories going.

This is what #motuswts can do now- these teeny tiny @celltracktech.bsky.social blu series tags can follow the smallest of creatures.
UPDATE: I saw it happen! At the Birds Canada research station at the tip of Long Point I watched an expert ever-so-gently and carefully put one of these tiny tags on a monarch. Let me walk you through the steps (1/4)
So cool to visit the Motus workshop at Birds Canada headquarters. The Motus community is studying the movement of birds, bats and insects. This tiny radio telemetry device will fit on a Monarch butterfly 😲 #invertebrates #birds 🌿 www.birdscanada.org/bird-science...

Only a few Jack Snipe have been tagged so far, but the data emerging on their spring migration is already proving revelatory. Thanks to the #MotusWTS system, we’re beginning to uncover previously unknown aspects of their movement.
Well done to the team @ldvnnr.bsky.social - exciting times!
Exciting to receive our first Motus ‘ping’ of a recently tagged Jack Snipe on its return migration. After spending time in the #LDV it moved rather quickly across the North Sea and pinged three masts in Germany, and is the first German recovery of a BTO ringed Jack Snipe @yorkbirding.bsky.social
