Medium: Ink on paper Size: 11.7×16.5 inches (29.7 x 41.9 cms) size; 220 GSM Scholar paper Duration: 5.5 hours February 13th, 2025 Reference: Own Image Location: Kokkare Belluru Bird Sanctuary, Maddur taluk, Mandya district, Karnataka, India During a recent sketching session, I observed a pair of Indian Grey Hornbills successfully raising their young this year. Hornbills are monogamous, meaning they have a single partner and mate for life. It was interesting to watch the male hornbill hunt Oriental Garden lizard and offer it to his better half. The pair constantly moved from one tree to another, encouraging the juvenile to fly and lookout for food. Confused, the juvenile wondered why his parents were hunting solo and leaving him out. As part of their growth lessons, the pair sometimes feeds the young one and motivates him to explore the woods independently. My work aims to depict the confusion and unexpectedness of the juvenile. Though perched on the fig tree, he lacks the experience to distinguish ripe from unripe figs. Eventually, he will learn through many trials and errors and his choice making will get better. Many cultures view hornbills as symbols of eternal love and fidelity. This part of the parenting behavior from the hornbills was a great learning experience for me. Love comes in various forms, sizes, colors, and emotions. There is so much to learn from nature and our fellow beings.

Ruby, our playful 9-year-old ground hornbill, loves to go on adventures with her care team around zoo grounds! Although she can fly, ground hornbills spend most of their time walking while looking for food. Ground hornbills are very vocal, using their wattles to make loud calls. #lovehornbillsday

Just learnt Feb 13 is #LoveHornbillsDay -- so sharing photos of the India Grey Hornbills I photographed in Rukhad last year.

there are lots of bare branches, and on it two Indian Grey Hornbills are perched. These birds are grey coloured with slightly lighter shade of grey for chest, stomach and tail. They have long beaks, with an extra protrusion on top of the bill.
