BOOK THOUGHTS If The Hunger Games lit the spark, Catching Fire is the explosion that follows. Crystal spent most of the book crying, and she knew she would. She'd been putting off reading it because she expected an emotional gut punch, and it delivered. Every tear was worth it. Keri felt the same way, she called the book freaking incredible. Even as a reread, it holds up beautifully. As she said, this is one of those rare YA dystopians that stands the test of time. If you've only seen the movies or you're an adult wondering whether this series is still worth your time, Keri says it best: Pick up the freaking book and read it. It's for everyone. For Lindsey, this reread felt like experiencing the story for the first time all over again rediscovering the emotion, the tension, and the characters she loved. Together, we all agree: you won't regret reading this book. It's powerful, emotional, and beautiful. MOVIE THOUGHTS The Catching Fire movie is everything a book adaptation should be-intense, emotional, and incredibly faithful to its source material. We all love this film, and for Keri, it's hands-down her favorite from the entire original series. The performances, the world-building, and the way the stakes rise with every scene make it an unforgettable sequel. This isn't just a good adaptation, it's one of the greats. It's the kind of film that reminds the book community (and Hollywood) why we crave more adaptations like this. And while we're still waiting to see if another young adult dystopian will ever reach the same level of cultural impact, one things for sure-Catching Fire set the bar sky-high. BOOK VS MOVIE Both the Catching Fire book and movie pick up where The Hunger Games left off, exploring the heavy consequences of survival and the growing unrest in Panem. Suzanne Collins novel dives deeper into Katniss's inner turmoil and the political tension simmering beneath the surface, giving readers a fuller look at life in the districts and the Capitol's growing control. Meanwhile, the movie adaptation brings that tension vividly to life with stunning visuals, emotional performances, and a faster pace that keeps the action moving. It streamlines some of the book's quieter moments but captures the heart of the story —the spark of rebellion, the power of unity, and the cost of defiance. Both versions build on the themes of fear, hope, and resistance, proving that Catching Fire isn't just a sequel-it's the turning point of the entire series. FINAL VERDICT In the end, when it came down to our final verdicts, we chose the book. But only barely. The novel gives us deeper emotion, richer world-building, and a closer look into Katniss's thoughts that even the best performances can't fully capture. I still think approval heavily matters in the context of contemporary dictatorships because you need *some* level of popular support to prop up your regime. Without that support, your country is a dry tinderbox that will be lit ablaze at the first spark of resistance

Columbia clashes with Kyrie in an empty space lit only by the sunlight overhead. Her spear deflected by Kyrie's counter, Kyrie grabs Columbia's face and forces her to lock eyes. In the span between seconds, Kyrie taunts the lone holy knight of Voeburt: "You remind me of a flower - perhaps you know it. Edelweiss, a symbol of endurance. Resistance. But as you are, you show none of this. Let us try this again. If you cannot strike me down, a rogue who has stolen the arts of other knights like you, then can you call yourself a worthy heritor of your father's skill?" A slightly different angle. The two women couldn't be any more different: Columbia, a knight born and trained in the line of holy dragoons and Kyrie, a daughter of wild warriors and of no allegiance to any crown or country. And yet, Columbia finds herself losing to this roaming free radical who has only ever wielded the dragoon arts in order to better defeat them.

Really glad I got to check out Relooted by @nyamakop.co.za at @mdffparkway.bsky.social. I was just already hooked by the idea of an Afro-futuristic Metroidvania but there’s also a lot of strategy involved. And my FAVORITE part is the digital museum of repatriated artifacts

Prepping for a talk at Uni of St Andrews, featuring learning from failure. As a freelancer, I don’t want to let clients down with failure, so I try to do my failing (and learning!) in safe spaces.
Residencies, prototyping in my studio, weather tests at my allotment. Where do you get chance to fail?
Space to fail 4 photos from artist residencies. One is a wee purple building, by the water, in Scalloway, Shetland. There’s a castle in the background. I spent 6 weeks living and working there. Another photo is of my sat on the deck at Cove Park in Argyle and Bute. Gorgeous, timber clad building to the right. Hills to the left. I’m making a sculpture from rolled up tubes of newspaper. 2 other photos are of 2D artworks. They are made from weaving waste materials into scraps of old fishing nets. 7 photos of a group residency at 101 Outdoor Arts. Photos feature lots of artists making, and discussing their work. Several of the photos feature scrap bike wheels, which I’ve been working with. 6 photos featuring my design and prototyping process. Designs are of a geometric lion. iPad designs. A rough design made with string and nails hammered into a scrap old palette. Designs of the lion lit with UV light. A photo of string and tape being tested at my allotment, for its resistance to rain.

Seems like you’ve typed them in your post. If it is a lot subversive resistance, wouldn’t that make it very political, too? I think I’d add literature or lit to your descriptors…something like “PoliticalFantasyLit” to avoid confusing people searching for nonfiction. Check active # for best exposure
