For years, the dairy industry has pushed to get whole milk back in schools after a law passed during the Obama administration moved to lower-fat drink options for students in an effort to combat childhood obesity, an effort that studies showed had some success. The administration has been making its intent to recommend Americans consume more dairy fat clear since last year, when FDA commissioner Martin Makary said at a press conference in September that the administration would be “ending the 50-year war on natural saturated fat.” The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine responded, asking the administration “not to put children’s cardiovascular health at risk with full-fat milk in schools” and stressed that “food and beverage choices are paramount, calling for a shift away from meat and dairy products, including whole milk, and toward fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.” The president signed the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act earlier this month, which allows schools participating in the National School Lunch Program to serve whole and 2% milk alongside skim and non-dairy options to children with a note from their parents saying they have a dietary restriction. The move comes after the USDA released new dietary guidelines for Americans that recommend eating more cheese and butter. “Whole milk. She wrote that whole milk contains eight grams of protein per cup, which is slightly lower than the nine grams of protein found in a cup of skim milk.
