I very much hope that, under Mauritian rule, priority will be given to the rights and interests of the Ilois, many of whom are very poor. It must be ensured that they can have a significant share in any benefits that come from development in the islands.

The behaviour of UK govts in this matter over the decades has been nothing short of disgraceful. At the same time, it cannot be said that Mauritian govts have always covered themselves in glory in looking out for the interests of the Ilois.

As someone whose great-grandmother was born on Peros Banhos, I'm glad to see progress on this.
However, true justice for the Ilois is by no means guaranteed, not least because they are still excluded from Diego Garcia, where most had lived. The US base will remain there.

Diego Garcia is home to a large US military base, and one that was built on misappropriated (read: STOLEN) land. One of the Chagos Islands which were illegally stripped from Mauritius by the British in the 1960s, all the native inhabitants were forceably removed and resettled agains their will. 😡
