Day6
Sd8 Ikazuchidō 2-0 (L)
Sd7 Dairinzan 2-0 (R)
Half Nigerian Ikazuchidō is becoming more popular over time. Both men joined sumo around same time, have had similar career success with one makushita appearance and both are knocking on the door of makushita promotion again #kyushubasho2025

This tournament has been incredible so far, but the heartbreak of Mita is real. Also hoping for a strong finish for my boy Ikazuchido, want to see him back in Div 3!

Sandanme rikishi Ikazuchido Neri. He's one of my favourites! I drew this portrait of him and mailed it to him along with a letter I wrote, and he actually reached out online to say thanks! One of the highlights of my time as an artist.

Sandanme and below: Futagoyama and Isegahama boys, Ikazuchido, Wakatakamoto, Hikarumusashi, SHOWTIME, Francis, Uratora, Kosei and all the debuting wrestlers, lets goooooo, and keep it injury-free. So hype for all of it. @sumo

Man, I love watching Ikazuchido every tournament, but knew very little about him - except his Judo background. I'm so glad he still has support.

Do you know Ikazuchido, the handsome half-Nigerian rikishi from Ikazuchi beya? Nikkan Sports published a column about him yesterday. It's longish, so I wrote the translation in Google Docs.

Prepare your tissues. Seriously.

Ikazuchi and Emi Kakizoe have shown so much support for Shishi--even to sponsor him as his family should he choose to naturalize.

Ikazuchido is a terrific young man whose goodness, tenacity and good karma led him to the Kakizoe's. I hope his mother is at peace knowing her son is well and cared for.

BTW, Ikazuchi Oyakata's foster-sumo-family is growing, firstly Shishi, now Ikazuchido. What a decent person that Oyakata is.

What a terrible story, poor Ikazuchido. I'm used to rooting for him already because of his judo throws, muscular/slimmer body and the fact that he's obviously hafu (not very preferable position in Japan to be in).
His family story is simply heartbreaking. It's a relief he can count on his Oyakata.

"I am your stablemaster, yes-- but from this day,
I am your parent."

Fighting back the tears already welling up in his eyes, Ikazuchido and his 'father' walked into their home.

Since then, Ikazuchido has been working harder than ever and is finally gaining weight.

"I cried," says Ikazuchido. "The thought that someone might have been able to save her if she had not been all alone crushed me with regret. She struggled on her own for so many years."

Returning to his stable in Tokyo, he was met at the door by his master, the former Kakizoe, who said to him,

"Good luck."
"I was honored and incredibly grateful," says Ikazuchido.

Tragedy struck last summer, during the heya's week-off from practice, when Ikazuchido traveled home to Saitama to see with his mother. There was no answer at her door, so

courtesy--traits he exemplifies today in his sumo life at Ikazuchi Beya where, as a Sandanme rikishi, he also works as a valet.

Hardworking and lighthearted, Ikazuchido has captured the attention of other oyakata including Miyagino, former Yokozuna Hakuho, who during last year's

A young wrestler to watch is Ikazuchido Neri--whose real name is Nelly Yamada.

Born 25 years ago to a Japanese mother and Nigerian father, Nelly rarely saw his dad and lost him entirely at age 8 when his parents divorced.

His once cheerful mother became mentally weakened from years of depression

would be great to see more love given to entertaining non-sekitori rikishi & matches (Yamato, Asakiryu, Ikazuchido to name a few guys)

also an English-language version of the match reviews and technique walkthroughs that Uncle Wakanohana and Akatsu do on Abema would be ace

Are you familiar with Ikazuchido yet? If not, check him out. Makushita 49. If he can get his weight up he might be trouble.

Ikazuchido (5-2) – Former judoka in action, great compensation for his lack of mass. Would love to see him in juryo but makushita might be a big challenge at this point. Got some flack for smashing his sagari to the dohyo in his last match but try catch me complaining hehe

I am too! Watching Ikazuchido grow over the last year has been fun. He's using all his judo knowledge in another form is amazing to watch. #sumo.

I know its gonna get lost but I also look forward to seeing Ikazuchido up a division in March. Also a well deserved pop-off on his victory! Lets go Nigerian stickbug judoka! #sumo
