Sea ice across the Arctic Ocean is shrinking to below-average levels this summer. NASA’s Operation IceBridge, an airborne survey of polar ice, just completed its first flights studying the aquamarine pools of melt water on the ice surface that may be accelerating the overall sea ice retreat. This large pool of melt water over sea ice was seen from an Operation IceBridge flight over the Beaufort Sea on July 14, 2016. During this summer campaign, IceBridge will map the extent, frequency and depth of melt ponds like these to help scientists forecast the Arctic sea ice yearly minimum extent in September. I think some time this or next week, I'll try to take a closer look, perhaps from the string of viewpoints above the Chalet de Cerro. Tonight in the evening light, it seems there might still be an 'icebridge' connecting both tongues. Coming weekend likely another heatwave.😢

First a bit of background. NASA's Operation IceBridge is an airborne mission that measures the surface of the ice sheet over time, how it's changing and where. It "bridges" the gap between NASA's ICESat-1 and upcoming @NASA_ICESat2 missions.

But they measure other stuff too! Operation IceBridge is an entire flying data lab, collecting terabytes of information every flight it takes. Their radars have been critical for my own research measuring subsurface ice formation in snow &amp; firn.

The shadow of NASA's P-3 aircraft is seen over an iceberg on a May 8, 2017 flight supporting NASA's Operation IceBridge mission. IceBridge began its final week of Arctic Spring 2017 surveys with a glacier-packed mission in Greenland, called Southeast Glaciers 01. The P-3 is a four-engine turboprop based out of Wallops and capable of long duration flights of 8-12 hours.
