I just started reciting random Japanese phonemes from the hirigana table I had to learn in class.
There were so many people *touching me* and I just wanted to be outside. 😅

I probably know about a third of Hirigana now, and following on with Japanese song lyrics with the parts I now know, has been a really satisfying feeling! Super motivating to learn more of it!

I am learning hirigana from a children's book. I try to learn 3 words a night. And add each word to a flipbook with flashcards. At least i will know how to order food. Udon is my favorite.

Abusing the Japanese writing system to make it 99.35% more efficient and infinitely worse

Why use kanji when you can use hirigana/katakana? to give clarity in meaning and make writing more concise?…

FCITX5 TANGENT:
There are a lot of things I like about fcitx5, some I even prefer over gboard, like the better clipboard functionality and how Anthy lets you customize the typing method for the JP keyboard (hirigana/katakana/thin katakana/rōmanji)

I love this bc I'm familiar with mozc, which…

I was told on other place you need to learn hirigana first then kanji before vocabulary
January 11, 2026 at 3:54 PM

this is why I've been so scared to talk about learning Japanese

this is what I did to practice hirigana and katakana tho

#CyberpunkRed Player Character! Ken is a simple medtech who joined, and very quickly left the Tyger Claws because he is not about that extortion shit. His parents are still working at Arasaka, and for now they are pretty chill with him running around and helping others #ttrpg #ttrpgcharacter

Brain rot thought about getting a tramp stamp tatto with the hirigana for "Dattebayo", saying "Believe It!" in bed, and telling gooners they're under my genjutsu.

this is the full chart, it's kinda funny. I like how the hirigana derived from 衣 looks exactly like 之. but nooooo, the hirigana from 之 is just a little curly line what
December 15, 2025 at 1:28 AM
looking at a chart for how hirigana are derived from hanzi

for some of them I'm like "ok yeah, this makes sense, this would make it easier to remember."

and the others are like ok you lazy fucks, fuck you mean 部 turns into a little checkmark
December 15, 2025 at 1:24 AM
I'm gonna explode tfym there's a DIFFERENT version of hirigana for typing
December 14, 2025 at 10:49 AM
To be fair, it already helps you learn hirigana (and katakana). Kanji is less effective, but it's still successful embedded some of the more common (assuming the goal is recognition, rather than reproduction)

Source: I couldn't do it before, and now I can.

Random language learning thought of the day:

I really like how poetic Japanese went with their days of the week. Unlike Chinese where it’s:l “Weekday 1, weekday 2, etc.” they went with “Moon day, fire day, water day, wood day, gold day, ground day, and Sun day”

Aren’t languages fascinating?

My brain kinda ignored the English part of nickname so when I read the hirigana I was twice surprised
FYM CHIITAN LIKED MY POST...

Did you start off with Hirigana/Katakana, or have you been learning Kanji simultaneously/ from the start?

In school we started with just reading/speaking in kana, and struggled when I had to start adding in Kanji.

Alas, my kanji
clashes with hirigana
and katakana

The Spy X Family one is part of a series for young learners that includes Hirigana and some early English. The Kinokuniya at the Chicago Mitsuwa had a Donbrothers Hirigana book too, but Zenkaiger is my first Sentai love. I could only find a link for that one.

I bought two Hirigana/ katakana study books that are Sentai and Spy X Family themed and one beginner textbook for normal adults so it evens out I guess.
November 16, 2025 at 3:14 AM
maybe even Japanese with just hirigana/katakana?

At least when I remember when I learned Chinese when we hit a word we didn't know the ultimate move was (rough translation) "if there's a side, read the side, if there's no side, read the middle" 有邊讀邊, 沒邊讀中間

in other words, make up a sound for it
