First study of its kind finds #deepseamining waste threatens life and #Foodwebs in the ocean’s dim “twilight zone”
Particle plumes ejected by #mining operations into deep #pacific waters threaten food source of more than half of the #zooplankton types -- leading to bottom-up […]

Deep-sea mining waste threatens life and foodwebs in the ocean's dim 'twilight zone,' first study of its kind finds
A new study led by researchers at the University of Hawaii (UH) at Mānoa published in Nature Communications is the first of its kind to show that waste discharged from deep-sea mining operations in th...

🍽️ Diet reconstructions show regional differences:
🔹 Swordfish eat more mesopelagic fish
🔹 Blue sharks prefer squid
🔹 Makos have a generalist diet

Excited to be at the #iDivconference2025 this week. First talk by @miguelbaraujo.bsky.social on #speciesDistributionModels and #networkTheory for #foodwebs and impacts of climate change.

Thanks for organising @idiv-research.bsky.social

In the Marais poitevin (2nd-largest agricultural marshland in western France), @camilleleclerc.bsky.social et al. show that large, complex habitats and stable hydrological conditions enhance complex and diverse aquatic #foodwebs — key to sustaining ecosystem integrity.

How does trophic connectivity between different ecosystems work at a landscape scale? We applied a novel conceptual framework with functional traits and fatty acid biomarkers to assess direct and indirect effects of landscape drivers on cross-ecosystem connectivity in stream-riparian #foodwebs
Fatty acid biomarkers reveal landscape influences on linkages between aquatic and terrestrial food webs
Stream and riparian habitats are meta-ecosystems that can be strongly connected via the emergence of aquatic insects, which form an important prey subsidy for terrestrial consumers. Anthropogenic per...

If you're at CCS 2025 this week:
Tues, Sep 2nd, 12:15 pm, Room 15, Melanie (@mhab.bsky.social) will present her work on functional motifs in foodwebs and networks.
Same day, Room 14, Tim (@timmauch.bsky.social) talks about diffusion-driven pattern formation in an opinion dynamical network model.

Fish biomass and warming - here one projection

Important: will be likely much worse because of expansion and intensification of marine heatwave which have a devastating impact of the whole foodwebs and because acidification intensifies much faster then predicted.

Warming of aquatic ecosystems disrupts aquatic–terrestrial linkages in the tropics - a natural experiment using geothermally-warmed streams showed how increased temperature reduced emerging adult insects, thus affecting terrestrial predators that rely on this prey subsidy #foodwebs
Warming threatens aquatic–terrestrial linkages: evidence from tropical geothermal streams
Terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are connected through energy fluxes partially driven by aquatic organisms that migrate to terrestrial environments during adulthood. According to the thermal perfor...

🍽️ What do they eat today?

🐟 Mostly fish—especially horse mackerels (Trachurus spp.)
🦐 Crustaceans
🦑 Cephalopods
📉 Sardines and anchovies are now less common in their diet

Here another one: sp.copernicus.org/articles/4-o... also off point - as humanity need a structural in depth analysis of the whole thing with focus on novel species, changing microbial foodwebs, and functional classes that increase in abundance as they show were the oceans are heading.

Its know to science - they are currently focusing on functional groups and community networks as changing microbial foodwebs are holy complex

The reports that do exist do not address the main issue - changing microbial foodwebs and changing biogechemical cycles

These reports are sadly quite simple

Incredible numbers 🤯

I tried out the playtest last week and the game is looking and playing great! I really loved the foodwebs system in particular (as I already mentioned elsewhere)
