The spirit we’ll be talking about for this #folklorefriday is from German folklore. While many spirits are elven or tiny people, the Puk is a two-foot-long dragon. Some depictions of the Puk have wings and others have a fiery tail. All have a serpentine body and the standard four legs.

At #Killington in the Lune valley, and into Cumberland, 15 miles away, foot and mouth disease in 1839 was met with a 'need fire'. What's that? Read on!

Excerpt from a text: Livelihoods were threatened by foot and mouth disease in 1839. In response, farmers resorted to a need fire, a ceremony by which it was believed the magic of the fire would provide a cure. The brand was taken from farm to farm, spreading as far as Skirwith in Cumberland. This was the last known occasion this superstition was acted upon. The importance of dairy farming is also illustrated by the residency of the butter merchant, James Wilkinson, in 1829. Killington Hall, Westmorland - a crenulated stone building of two storeys with a gable end and chimneys visible. The setting is a stone-walled lane with grass and trees rising above it. The old Scotch road, Killington. A straight, undulating minor road bounded by stone walls heading towards plantation conifers on the hills rising at the back of the shot. This was the medieval route from Lancaster to Scotland via Carlisle. Despite its apparent straightness, the Roman road was elsewhere (and still visible in the landscape).

The Burryman or Burry Man is the central figure in an annual ceremony or ritual, the Burryman's Parade, that takes place in the town of South Queensferry, near Edinburgh on the south bank of the Firth of Forth in Scotland, on the second Friday of August. The custom is associated with, but separate from, the town's Ferry Fair. On the Friday morning of the fair, a local man is covered from head to ankles in burrs (the sticky flowerheads or seedheads of two species of burdock that grow locally, and walked through the town for over nine hours. At many points in the day The Burryman is given a glass of whisky by pubs and hostelries, and local people as he passes by. This is taken through a straw due to the restrictive nature of the Burryman costume. The meaning of this ceremony has long been forgotten, but it has been the cause of much speculation. The tradition is thought to date back about 400 years, possibly tied to welcoming the harvest or marking the change of seasons. Held every year on the second Friday of August, the parade has been described by historians as “one of Scotland’s most intriguing folk traditions still celebrated.” Custom holds that the Burryman is to be “a stout man or robust lad”, according to 19th-century author William Wallace Fyfe, who warned that “weakly persons have been known to faint under the heat and fatigue of the dressing.” For the 14th time, 43-year-old Andrew Taylor will take on the physically demanding role. His predecessor interviewed him before passing on the torch, making sure he had the right attitude to take on the job. Andrew, who works as an environmental warden for Edinburgh council, said he had been taught that the Burryman represented a scapegoat for the town who would take away bad luck. “It brings everybody out, you sense the good community spirit while you’re doing it,”
