I don't write fiction, but was struck by your cutting a character you loved. In my own writing, it would be a turn of phrase or metaphor that tickles me, but doesn't really work. Cutting hurts, but can be so good.

Today is the birthday of author Robert E. Howard, creator of the #sword&sorcery character #Conan the Barbarian. His work had a huge hand in determining my tastes in fiction as I was growing up, and continues to be a major influence in my writing today. Thanks for all the memories, Bob!

He wrote the sensational and fast-paced stories about crime, heroes, romance, or science fiction that were collectively called pulp fiction. In the 1920s and ’30s, his work was printed on the cheap, thin paper that gave the genre its name. Howard gained some notoriety by writing vivid stories, quickly, and publishing them in one of the most popular pulp-fiction magazines "Weird Tales." How he did this is a good story: Howard told a friend that before writing a story, he heard it: the sounds of metal swords clashing, people screaming, bones breaking. He said the character of Conan burst into his head and – panting from battle – demanded to know why his story hadn’t been written yet. So Howard hammered on the keys of his typewriter as if possessed, then paced the room and muttered dialog. He would exhaust and sometimes scare himself. Howard told a friend that writing some Conan scenes felt like “opening a door that perhaps ought to stay shut.” This kind of writing led to something that seemed more like an oral history, told around a campfire. Howard’s stories about morally ambiguous anti-heroes remain popular – and have helped the pulp-fiction genre remain relevant for new generations of readers. Baan’s voice echoed around the cave, and her secret was carried on the voices of the clan. Baydor. A strange silence filled the air then Ni la began to groan and spasm on the ground. Baan restrained Hooyip from rushing to her side as others moved hurriedly to clear a large area surrounding the thrashing girl with the strange white eyes. Slowly Ni la’s seizure subsided, yet still no one approached her. Baydor. Baydor. Baydor. The clan had seen and said his name three times. Hooyip turned to the entrance and saw him standing in the centre, the eagle’s wings spanning out from either shoulder, his body naked but for a strip of hide between his legs, and as he entered the cave Hooyip saw the carvings on the man’s face: a third eye on the middle of his forehead, drops of sad water tattooed on both cheeks.
