I asked if she was all right and she gestured toward the overturned chair and tray table by her bed. “I’ve made a mess,” she moaned.
She was out-of-sorts, but otherwise seemed fine. “It’s okay,” I offered, “I’m here. Let’s get you tidied up and see what Cook has for us.”
Relief.
Drafts and chills are a regular companion in the keep, even in summer. Waking this morning was more difficult with the cold, wet weather. As I made my way to the lady’s chamber I heard her calling softly for me, “I need your help.” I found her curled on the floor in her nightshirt.
I sidled up, making sure she heard my steps, grabbed her hand, and looked with her out at the snowfall on the grounds.
“I can still do wonders,” she beamed. “The old gray mare IS still what she used to be!”
“Yes, she is.”
We leaned against each other, listening to the stillness.

She paused, touching her forehead as if to coax her thoughts. I watched her gather herself, determined to conjure success. When she finished, a long silence seemed to ignore her efforts. Her shoulders sank. As she sighed an icy breath, snowflakes began to fall outside. She smiled.

I was fretting with Cook, after we broke fast this morning, about the wet, gloomy weather and how it wasn’t conducive for proper holiday celebrations. Lady Navarroh must have been listening in for I later found her standing at an open window attempting a weather incantation.

The Lady of the Keep was once a disciplined enchantress. Her creative skills were sought after by aspiring mages and local dabblers. She’d once held classes showing how to give final touches to well-crafted incantations. Her wandering mind of late has introduced an element of chaos.

Belts were drawn when the Lord of the Keep died almost three years ago. A few of the hired hands were let go but we managed to keep the main staff, some from families that have been part of the keep for generations. I thank the Old and New for my brother’s family who stood with us.

The roads are a bit mushy along the detour we have to take as they near completion of First Bridge. The cold, wet weather has made sure of that. I marvel at the skills of the stonemasons as they build the new span. Strength and elegance is already apparent as its arches take shape.

The area just east of the keep is heavily forested, right up to the base of the Clifffalls. To the west is a hilly meadow that ends at the Mahran Bluffs, where the land abruptly drops about a hundred feet to the seacoast. Across the water are the Saler Isles, and beyond, the ocean.
Though now associated by the locals with the Keep, her ladyship was once known by another name, Eldora The Fey, which was short for her proper given maiden name, Lady Eldora Chelsea Marcollette Rospoon della Fey. The name, Navarroh, was added when she married the Lord of the Keep.💍

Traveling west directly to the village by cart took an hour using First Bridge and Second Bridge. Losing First Bridge added another two hours each way as we now have to head east and south through Wood Glen and across Bowman's Bridge to reach the village. Thankfully, a scenic trip.

Last year a storm wreaked havoc on the lands surrounding the keep. One of the casualties was First Bridge, an old foot bridge just wide enough to allow a small horse-drawn cart to pass. It was mostly timber with stone footings and was washed away. A new stone bridge is in the works.

I referred to it as “First Bridge” in my old Twitter #DnDFitness journey. Uncanny how it looks like my #Kahruvel aqueduct now, which started as stone ruins & was rebuilt as scaffolding.
First life imitating #SecondLife.
