March 9, 2025... I bought some bait for wild birds. What's surprising is the ingredients of this bait. They come from China, Australia, India, Indonesia, the US, Canada, and a little bit from Japan. Unfortunately, it seems that even bird food cannot be procured in Japan. How sad.

6/ HPAI H5 risk levels in Great Britain

Conclusion Since our last assessment on 18 March 2025, the number of found dead wild bird cases of HPAI H5 reported per week has decreased and has remained at lower levels compared to February in Great Britain. Report cases in Europe continue to decline though there will be variation in surveillance plans across Europe. Similarly, although HPAI H5 is still present in wild birds in Europe, with reports predominantly in the Wadden Sea area (the Netherlands, Denmark and north-west Germany), Hungary and Poland, we are not expecting wild bird movements from these areas of Europe into Great Britain at this time of year. It is expected that all of the migratory water bird species have now departed Great Britain, with the possible exception of small numbers of migratory waterfowl remaining in Scotland. Cases in resident waterfowl (mute swans, Canada geese, greylag geese, and mallard ducks) and gulls have continued to be reported in recent weeks in Great Britain indicating a long tail in the epidemic this year. HPAI H5 has been reported in seabirds, albeit still at low levels, and it is not clear if this will continue over the summer. The increase in reports in gulls earlier this year has eased off with fewer gull cases in April although it is not known how gull cases will continue over the summer as in previous years. Currently there is downward trajectory of HPAI H5 cases in wild birds in Great Britain, there has been no Ips for 4 weeks, we are at the end of outward wild bird migration and environmental conditions are less suitable for HPAI virus survival in coming months. Therefore, it is concluded that the national risk level for HPAI H5 in wild birds can be lowered from VERY HIGH (occurs almost certainly) to HIGH (occurs very often). There have been no IPs in Great Britain for the last 4 weeks, with low numbers reported in the weeks preceding that. The risk of infection of poultry in GB with stringent biosecurity is therefore lowered to LOW (rare but does occur) with high uncertainty. The risk to poultry with suboptimal biosecurity in Great Britain is also lowered, to MEDIUM (occurs regularly) with high uncertainty. Additional biosecurity measures came into force on 13 December 2024 in 4 counties in England. At noon on the 25 January 2025, the regional avian influenza prevention zone (AIPZ) that was declared in the East Riding of Yorkshire, City of Kingston upon Hull, Norfolk and Suffolk to mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of disease occurring was extended to the whole of the England and Scotland, and on 30 January 2025 in Wales. This means that it is a legal requirement for all bird keepers within the zone to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks, of whatever type or size. This does not include a requirement to house birds, unless you are also in a 3km protection zone or in a region where the mandatory housing order is in place. On 16 February 2025, a mandatory housing order is in place in Cheshire, City of Kingston Upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Norfolk, North Yorkshire, Shropshire, Suffolk, Worcestershire and York. As of 7 April 2025, the AIPZ housing measures were extended to include County Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland and Tyne and Wear. This is being kept under constant review. We are continuing to closely monitor the situation in Europe and to review the risk. It is important that stringent adherence to good biosecurity practices is maintained.

Conclusion Since our last assessment on 11 August 2025 (11 August 2025: High pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Great Britain and Europe; https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/689de8a2b4b6acd3411339e4/11_August_2025_-_High_pathogenicity_avian_influenza__HPAI__in_Great_Britain_and_Europe.pdf), cases of HPAI H5Nx have continued through late August and September in wild birds in Great Britain mainly in gulls and seabirds. Cases of HPAI H5N1 in resident waterbirds (Canada geese, mute swans and mallards) and also in inland wild birds including released pheasants have also continued albeit at lower levels. Although wild bird cases have fallen in September in Great Britain, the numbers of wild bird cases and poultry outbreaks in Europe are markedly increasing and there is an increasing likelihood of new introductions into Great Britain in the coming weeks through the ongoing migration of migratory ducks, geese and swans from northern and eastern Europe. Therefore, the national risk level for HPAI H5 in wild birds in Great Britain is maintained at HIGH (occurs very often). In our previous assessment on the 11 August 2025 there were 9 new IPs in Great Britain of which 4 were in the first 10 days of August. Since then there were a further 2 IPs in August and then just 1 at the end of September, representing a decrease in poultry outbreaks in Great Britain. However, due to the ongoing migration of wild birds into Great Britain from Europe where the number of HPAI H5 cases is increasing, the risk of infection of poultry in Great Britain with suboptimal biosecurity is maintained at MEDIUM (occurs regularly) with low uncertainty. The risk to poultry with stringent biosecurity is maintained at LOW (rare but does occur) with medium uncertainty.

2025 has been a year of owls for me. I've gone from effectively seeing no owls in the wild, to seeing a Great Grey, a few Short Eared, and now a pair of nesting Barred Owls.

The White House’s 2026 budget would end the annual North American Breeding Bird Survey and the Bird Banding Laboratory, programs under the U.S. Geological Survey’s Ecosystems Mission Area. For more than a century, bird studies have operated as follows: Scientists band birds and wait to see what happens to them. Since 1920, the Bird Banding Laboratory has worked with Canadian scientists to run the North American Bird Banding Program. More than 77 million birds have been banded in the United States and Canada; more than 5 million of those birds have been “reencountered,” or found and logged by someone later on. Bird banding might seem low-tech, but the program has provided some of the best information we have about certain species. It’s how we know about Wisdom, a Laysan albatross that lives on Midway Atoll and is the oldest confirmed wild bird in the world. She was banded in 1956 and still incubating eggs as of last year, at 74 years old. Banding is how agencies track the health of waterfowl populations and set hunting limits and seasons for the birds at sustainable levels. Wood ducks were hunted to such an extent that they were close to extinction when the North American Bird Banding Program started. Today, there are an estimated 4 million of them, and the population is increasing. Hunters are some of the most frequent loggers of banded birds.
