Not sure if taking dodgy record shots is genetic, but just got some nifty pics from my non-birding daughter of Buller's Shearwaters knocking a heart-shaped hole into a baitball.
We watched this determined bald eagle fly back and forth over a large baitball until it finally swooped down through the gull chaos and snagged this fish. It looks to us like an adult herring!

Lovely day fishing Moccasin side of Don Pedro. Found so many bait balls and large schools of what I think are juvenile Kokanee (too big for the teeny shad). We ran so many lures/baits through them hoping a king or brown was lurking for a stray but the only takers didn’t stick for my rookie friends.

Same. The last time I was at the beach in 3 ft of water, a baitball next to us attracted dozens of redfish, which then bombarded us on our little float mats. Sting rays driven to shore along w the redfish. People scurrying to shore. All bc sharks were breaching & spinning VERY CLOSE TO SHORE.

If all these public figures who whisper anonymously about how they are very upset would stand up together, Trump wouldn't have enough people to punish them all. (Baitball theory!) Meanwhile, federal employees with way fewer resources than these people are risking their livelihoods by speaking out.

Vortex of Survival: Baitball Frenzy on a North Carolina Shipwreck
We launched with Atlantis Charters (trip organized by Gotham Divers) and headed east into open Atlantic Ocean. This corridor of wrecks concentrates life: currents stack plankton, baitfish ride the structure, and predators cruise the edges. The top of the deck was approximately 85 ft deep, allowing for slight variation. The main action was positioned between 60 and 80 ft.

We’ve been seeing quite a few herring baitballs off Oak Bay recently, a good sign that productivity is increasing. Baitballs are a feeding frenzy of seabirds—mainly gulls—all after an undulating ball of forage fish just below the surface.

A beautiful screening yesterday in #Brussels of 'Ocean', voiced by one of the great naturalists of our time, Sir David Attenborough.
Despite the stark messages on the state of our ocean, the film’s final chapter is one of hope and optimism ⤵️
