Also, brands I like: I keep mentioning Zebra dry plates. Currently the only (but hopefully not for long) company producing dry plates and also dry tintypes. they are expanding/innovating too, and just released a faux oratype, new tank, and are threatening to produce new autochromes.

i also think that i'm not a collector, mainly because the things i *do* collect are for work things (lenses and imaging devices) but then i remember that I do collect autochromes (plates only, not prints) and strange things that are unconnected yet connect in my mind. And antique bed linens.
I often think I'm 'not a collector' but*really*, I do collect:

Antique copper moulds on a seaside theme (fish, etc)
Early English blue-and-white china
Small silver or wood spoons, for tea caddies
Hag-stones
Vintage pictures of bathing ladies for my bathroom

... which is actually... many things.

NatGeo on preserving autochromes—the earliest color photos before Kodachrome (1935). They’re decaying but also still developing.
A century ago, there was a race to make the first color photos. Now there’s a race to save them.
The revolutionary invention of autochromes changed photography. As those pictures decay, they're revealing a new kind of beauty.

These autochromes were taken 107 years ago at Lulworth Cove in Dorset, in August 1913 - less than a year before The Great War. They were taken by Lieutenant Colonel Mervyn O’Gorman and show the young Christina Bevan (1897-1981). They are original colour & not colourised.

Mervyn O'Gorman took some of the first Autochromes, and my word, are they not gorgeous?

"But as with many remaining early color photos, National Geographic’s have been altered by light, heat, humidity, and improper handling. Plates have cracked and fissured. Oxidizing silver particles have created radiant, amoeba-shaped orange blotches."

Glass plates are easy and awesome. The tintypes are hard but oh so worth it.

Autochromes are going to be challenging and expensive, but 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯

This is cool: Studying decaying autochromes, a colour photographic process prevalent from the 1900s until the 1930s (National Geographic--you may be asked to enter your e-mail address but it's otherwise free):

Nejc Urankar, the proprietor of Zebra Dry Plates, is once again strongly suggesting on FB that he is considering production of commercial autochromes! Asking for feedback on interest and willingness to pay steep prices for difficult-to-manufacture plates. Would be sooooooo neat. 😍😍 #BelieveInFilm

That isn't recorded, but the options are obviously limited, because autochromes weren't commercially released until 1907 and he died in 1912.
