Last night there was a pretty good shaker off of Oregon on the Juan de Fuca plate. 6M

Felt by the sensor at #alberniweather but too far to be felt by humans here. :)

No threat of Tsunami.

Rainfall warning in effect as a mild atmospheric river points its fire hose at us. 95-135mm expected in the next 24 hours. The airport officially received 49mm on the 10th. Alberniweather recorded 47mm so perhaps we are not undercounting as much as I thought […]

Since it's now the next day, my neighbour's rain gauge finished out yesterday at 47.8 mm but then there's this post from a little while ago:

There is a little bit of snow on the side of the road at Taylor River near Sutton Pass. Be careful today! Doesn’t look like any other cameras have snow on the South Island but that could change.

You can find local webcams and drivebc cams quickly on the webcam page at Alberniweather.

@alberniweather I have no real like for the inroduction of the orange colour, and sometimes shaded yellow or grey.

What I appreciate is that in the text of the alert, theu now include qualitative degree of certainty.

I have no idea what orange means. Grey, Yellow and Red were fine. Perhaps […]

@alberniweather Hubard Gracier M 7.0 was mostly strike slip which means the plates moving horizontally against each other. (strike slip can cause more damage to buildings, normal and reverse faults are vertical movements and will trigger tsunamis if they happen […]

@alberniweather Oh, I was also going to say that rain across the island from say Tofino to Parksville is strongly orographically forced. I'm sure Port Alberni patterns are influenced to a large degree in this way.

@alberniweather Much of what you write is reasonable but be careful about using recollections to think about what was. Anecdotal evidence is absolutely unreliable.

Our summers are dry because of large scale circulation effects. The jet stream moves north in the summer (and weakens) and we tend […]

@MatWright @alberniweather I'm down in Victoria and I could swear I heard one. Also, our power flickered. Aside from what seemed like hail earlier today, our weather has been fine.

2/2 I continued blogging Alberniweather and on FB and Twitter but I gradually removed my personal self from Facebook and eventually during the Pandemic, I decided the Facebook environment was just too toxic even for weather stuff and I shut down my page and left Facebook completely.

The impact […]

1/2 Thanks to @akurjata for this interesting article. It speaks to me. :)

I’ve been weather blogging @alberniweather since 2005. It is interesting how it has changed, and how I have changed.

My website used to be just data from the (expensive) station I bought when I moved back to Port Alberni […]
