A day of thorough disappointment.

Disappointed in the world, for multiple reasons.

Disappointed in myself, for multiple reasons.

I'm hoping for a better tomorrow.

@ccohanlon I'm sorry, you're right, that was the wrong time for an attempt at lighthearted humour. I'll delete it.

One of my goals for 2026 is to write more. My first blog post of the year is now live:

"The Future Is Cooperative"

https://whateverthing.com/blog/2026/01/05/the-future-is-cooperative/

Wherein I discuss the co-op model as an alternative to corporations/startups, and share my experiences so far […]

Huh, that's almost refreshing. Getting DDOS'd by old fashioned open redirect bots.

And speaking of which, it's funny how everyone talks about the Butlerian Jihad as if it isn't just another Torment Nexus.

The Butlerian Jihad led to a world where people were regularly shooting up on debilitating smart drugs to do maths for their feudal overlords because their ancestors decided […]

I wonder if there's an easy way to browse the oldest lines of code in a codebase.

@b0rk Ah, makes sense. I've considered doing something similar for my blog, but since it's purely static I am not sure if I could or should finagle a server-side component into the requests. So I've been dragging my feet on it.

@b0rk I very much like that stripey-ribbon design. In terms of the comments, though, how is it fetching them? Client-side?

Oh, wait, maybe it does support creating quotes ... but only for posts and servers that allow it? Okay. Fair. I do wish the menu entry showed up greyed-out, though; having it not show up at all seemed odd.
New #ivory is out! And it seems to support native mastodon quoting now.

Well, viewing the quotes, at least. Can't see a way to post a quote yet. But progress is great to see!

@ramsey I have no time or patience for solutions that look for problems. Maybe that is why I find this whole turn of events so vulgar.

Having an oil industry makes you a target of United States imperialism.

Ditching fossil fuels is a national security and sovereignty imperative.
January 5, 2026 at 4:40 AM
@ramsey Indeed. And people don't seem to understand a gorram thing about that soul-sucking nature of it.
January 5, 2026 at 4:27 AM
@ramsey No need to apologize. I think there are a lot of people who feel this way (including me).

I don't know what the future holds - work seems to be stable and tolerable for now, despite some LLM stuff - but it's hard to see good things on the horizon career-wise.

Cougar sighting on the Songhees walkway in #victoriabc #yyj #esquimalt #vicwest (yes, those are all valid hashtags for folks in that area... be safe.)

https://cheknews.ca/cougar-sighting-reported-in-esquimalt-1297608/
The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) has confirmed a cougar sighting in the Esquimalt area Friday night. According to the report, the cougar was spotted in Esquimalt Friday night just before 9 p.m. along near the Songhees Walkway, the scenic shoreline path that runs from West Bay Marina to Downtown Victoria. As of Saturday afternoon, COS says it received one report of a sighting in the area. Google Maps image shows the Songhees Walkway path that runs from West Bay Marina to downtown Victoria. No aggressive behaviour has been reported, but officers warn the public to give the animal space. The COS also advises you to β€œStay calm and keep the cougar in view, pick up children immediately. Children frighten easily and the noise and movements they make could provoke an attack. Back away slowly, ensuring that the animal has a clear avenue of escape.” If you do encounter a cougar, bear or an unusual wildlife sighting, the BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) advises the public to contact call the 24/7 hotline: 1-877-952-RAPP (7277). **READ ALSO:Three cougars spotted in Central Saanich, prompting safety reminder** Editorial Policies Report an Error Share an Opinion

During the Iraq war I let people gaslight me into thinking I didn't know enough about "foreign policy" and "global politics" to say the war was a bad idea.

I would hesitate because, I'm not an expert on those things.

But I was right then and I'm right now.

You don't need to be an expert, it's […]
