when i type in mandarin, i use zhuyin. when i type in cantonese, words common to both are easy, but i have to remember the obscure assigned mandarin reading of a cantonese-specific character and type it in zhuyin (e.g. 冇 is ㄇㄡˇ) which is torture, and when that fails i switch to handwriting

i feel like my generation was when our 拆字能力 went 大打折扣. we had generations of 倉頡 users until pinyin and zhuyin input methods got real big

Pinyin is only useful if you have no intention of learning Mandarin and just need to write a few words for Western audiences. Colonial training wheels lmao.
Zhuyin is better for damned near everything else - especially computer keyboards.

My Chinese also sucks and I was taught zhuyin, plus pinyin and radicals. Didn't know until later that Chinese is a nested system of simple characters jammed into a box, which would have been so much more helpful when memorizing. Long way to say I think whole-word is a bad method.

I think the fun thing about zhuyin (and part of the original intent) is that it gives the language a distinct phonemic writing system without borrowing another. I kinda like the Hokkien mixed script using it too, less jarring than Latin mixed script and more accessible than POJ at the moment

Update: I'm so happy that Steam games seem to be working on Zorin, and I managed to install a Zhuyin keyboard. I have very few reasons to go back to Windows now!
