In the past she was worshipped as a goddess of good fortune alongside Benzaiten & Daikokuten, the three deities being known as Santen. Eventually Benzaiten became so popular that Marishiten was all but forgotten. Zenkyoan temple in Kyoto enshrines Marishiten and has a collection of boar statues.

Zenkyoan Temple (once a sub-temple of the much larger Kenninji Temple in Kyoto, Japan) honours the Buddhist goddess Marishiten who was believed to ride in a chariot drawn by seven boars or upon a boar. She's believed to be the personification of sunlight and deity of protection.
