Vance told Fox News on Wednesday that he had not spoken to Elon Musk over backing a 2028 presidential bid, while also criticizing the billionaire’s plans to start a new political party. Speaking on The Ingraham Angle, Vance denied a Wall Street Journal report that he had discussed the backing of a 2028 bid with Musk, calling the report “completely fake.” Vance said it would be “a huge mistake” for Musk to proceed with plans to start a new party. “Whether you (Musk) like it or not, you are now perceived by the far left as on the side of the American right… the idea that Elon is ever going to go back… where Democrats and Republicans both like him, that’s not going to happen,” Vance said. “If he doesn’t like things the Republican party is doing, my advice to Elon would be try to fix the Republican party… Elon would make a much bigger difference if he stayed loyal to President Trump’s Republican party,” Vance said. Musk had said in July that he will start a new political party for voters disappointed with both the Republicans and Democrats, after a bitter, public falling out with President Donald Trump which also saw the Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO exit his role in the Trump administration. But a WSJ report said on Tuesday that Musk had since done little to further his plans for a third party, and was instead seeking to maintain ties with Vance and potentially back him for a 2028 presidential bid. Musk had spent about $300 million backing Trump and other Republicans in the 2024 elections. But his relationship with the president had largely soured this year, especially amid Musk’s harsh criticism of Trump’s “big beautiful bill.”
