Hey #Nashville #Journalists 🦞: Last week, Vanderbilt University Medical Center #VUMC shut down its Program in #LGBTQ Health and fired all the staff.

This seems newsworthy, but I haven't seen any reporting on it.

tntranstaskforce On Tuesday, June 24, the Vanderbilt Program for LGBTQ Health staff, which supported connecting LGBTQ people to care, was all let go of their jobs effective immediately. This layoff has impacted at least four community members so far, so the programs and education they were doing have stopped. One of the most significant programs is the Trans Buddy program, which connects transgender people with volunteers to support them in Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) doctors' appointments. This layoff continues to be a trend with VUMC Administration continuing to hurt an already marginalized community after the release of the Medical Records over to the AG back in 2023, as we have continued to dismantle any programs that help marginalized populations. The implications will be felt throughout the community as the Program was able to connect many people who already have hesitations about interacting with the healthcare complex due to sexual orientation or gender identity to culturally competent and affirming care inside or outside of the VUMC system. No clinical impacts have occurred besides support at appointments from the Trans Buddy Program. At this time, when we should be supporting our transgender and larger LGBTQ community members, VUMC Administration continues to show they are not willing to help us. The Vanderbilt Program of LGBTQ Health has had a Community Advisory Board since 2018, and the current members want to share their voices with the community to let them know that we disapprove of their current moves. We will no longer sacrifice our credibility to support an institution that does not help us. Please share and get the word out that this vital community resource has been ripped from us. Doing it at the end of Pride Month adds an extra layer of viciousness. We aren't sure what the next steps are, but as a community, we will continue to overcome as we are resilient.
