An outstanding report for the coming month by Paul James.

The Bewick Swans DID return to the Arun valley but just three so far.

Plenty to see at the moment and lots more birds to come.

A couple of good bird finds in Sussex for January. Tundra Bean Goose on my local patch and then a Caspian Gull on an industrial estate, most likely from a German project, but awaiting info. Nice comparison v Herring Gull.

What does the cold weather mean for our birds & which species might we see next month?
No more guessing - Paul James will be writing about what to look out for in the coming month.
Combined with our weekly round-up, this should give local birders some great insights #SussexBirds

The long staying Osprey at Arundel performed as requested for the Tuesday Birders this morning, at one point flying right over our heads. Two juvenile Hobbies were also on The Hanger. Redpolls, Redwing, Coal Tit, Cattle Egret and Mandarin Duck were amongst the other goodies. #birds #sussexbirds

Great work from the Sussex Barn Owl team who monitored over 200 boxes. Although numbers were down on last year by about 10%.

Some great findings in the report here;

They're not much bigger than sparrows and it was the other side of the river so these are cropped.

Struggled to get enough depth of field for them both to be in focus but this seems to get both (on phone screen, anyway)

Lunchtime walk. River Adur near Upper Beeding. There was a pair of kestrels hopping along a fence line parallel to the path we were on. Magic few minutes slowly following them as they hunted the field the other side.

This is the female. More to follow.

Kestrels hunting over Devil's Dyke.

Great to be above them as they hovered over the northern escarpment, not how we normally see them. Windy day but they were able to be stationary for long periods.
