Let’s be clear what energy #StandingCharges are.

They are made up of:

1 - the cost of connecting you to the energy network

2 - the cost of govt subsidies for its pet projects (Tory & Labour)

The first is legitimate, transparent & heavily regulated

The second is none of the above.

The daily energy standing charge is widely seen as unjust. But are the alternatives—based on consumption, property size, or means-testing—any better? We break down the massive challenges in fixing.

The Great Energy Divide: Is There a Fair Way to Pay Standing Charges?
The UK government is currently grappling with a question that touches every household: is the way we pay our energy standing charges truly fair, and if not, how do we fix it? The current system, which...

The way we pay energy standing charges is highly controversial. Should everyone pay the same, or should the charge be linked to how much energy you actually use?

We want to know your opinion! This poll will be part of an article!

Zonal energy pricing has been binned. But that still leaves Scotland with the highest #StandingCharges in Europe.
Standing charges are unfair to many.
Ofgem is giving us a ‘choice’ of standing charge, or none but higher energy price, but really, in my view, these should be binned.

If you stop topping up your gas meter over the summer months, #StandingCharges will be waiting when you next top up.

To avoid being stung by unexpected payments, make sure you’re adding credit to your meter throughout the summer, so the standing charges are covered.

We have opened a consultation to look at how we could introduce low or zero standing charge tariff options under the price cap.

If implemented, these tariffs would be available by next winter.

UK energy companies have a tendency to fleece their customers by charging compulsory "standard charges" on top of their energy use bills, even for those customers who've used negligible gas &/or electricity. This has to change

Ofgem's Tim Jarvis, fundamentally misunderstands what is needed.
People on low incomes, or with special energy needs, should never be paying standing charges, whether or not included in general bills.
These are the very people who wont be wasting energy; they simply can't afford to.

I’ve noticed that the debate around the ridiculous #standingcharges applied to our energy bills has gone quiet. Why the hell are we being charged simply for being a customer of an energy company, it’s a charge that we have no control over and we cannot avoid.
